You're a polished diamond
Now you're feeling kinda rough
Yes I know how long you've been searching
For the perfect touch
You better hear what I say
I can tell your eyes are just about to
give you away

Cause there's the girl that you were after
Feel your heart beating faster now
There's the girl you were after
Can you say that you don't want her anymore

Just take my word now
Cause you know it's true
she ain't good enough
for the likes of you
You better hear what I say
I can tell your eyes are just about to
give you away

Cause there's the girl you were after
Feel your heart beating faster now
There's the girl that you were after
And all this time you can't get past her
There's the girl you were after
Broken glass, complete disaster
There's the girl you were after
Can you say that you don't want her anymore

I believed you once
When you explained
That it wasn't so tough
To forget her name

Cause there's the girl that you were after
Feel your heart beating faster now
There's the girl that you were after
And all the time you can't get past her
There's the girl that you were after
Broken glass complete disaster
There's the girl that you were after
Can you say that you don't want her anymore

There's the girl
There's the girl
There's the girl
There's the girl (can you say that you don't want her anymore)

Well, these lyrics from the actual song compared to the lyrics in the video change my view. Extra lyrics include the lines, "She's gonna break your heart again" and "She's setting you up (my friend?)" - I originally thought it was about a guy who lost interest in someone after being in love for such a long time. With extra lyrics, I'm now not sure.

Got to know this song 17 years ago, one of my favorites and was hard to understand the lyrics. Knew it was a guy I love with someone, but unsure if the girl was good or not. Last year I went through the same situation ,for the first time in my life, described in the lyrics and know the answer, it’s about a toxic and emotional codependent relationship... the guy do suffered a lot during and if he was able to, to overcome it...

I just saw Heart last week and Nancy said she wrote this about a male friend of hers.

I had always heard the lyrics as telling him off. Lines like "She's not good enough, for the likes of you." as her calling the guy arrogant.

Turns out she meant that literally. She was speaking to a good guy who kept going back to a woman who was bad for him.

This song is about a female helping out a male friend who was a good guy that kept chasing after a woman who was bad for him. Now years later, it turns out that woman turned out to be a complete mess and it is known that she\'s not a good woman. The singer is pointing that out to her male friend and encouraging him to move on from her emotionally.

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

This song seemingly tackles the methods of deception those who manipulate others use to get victims to follow their demands, as well as diverting attention away from important issues. They'll also use it as a means to convince people to hate or kill others by pretending acts of terrorism were committed by the enemy when the acts themselves were done by the masters of control to promote discrimination and hate. It also reinforces the idea that these manipulative forces operate in various locations, infiltrating everyday life without detection, and propagate any and everywhere. In general, it highlights the danger of hidden agendas, manipulation, and distraction, serving as a critique of those who exploit chaos and confusion to control and gain power, depicting a cautionary tale against falling into their traps. It encourages us to question the narratives presented to us and remain vigilant against manipulation in various parts of society.
