Well, these lyrics from the actual song compared to the lyrics in the video change my view. Extra lyrics include the lines, "She's gonna break your heart again" and "She's setting you up (my friend?)" - I originally thought it was about a guy who lost interest in someone after being in love for such a long time. With extra lyrics, I'm now not sure.
Got to know this song 17 years ago, one of my favorites and was hard to understand the lyrics. Knew it was a guy I love with someone, but unsure if the girl was good or not. Last year I went through the same situation ,for the first time in my life, described in the lyrics and know the answer, it’s about a toxic and emotional codependent relationship... the guy do suffered a lot during and if he was able to, to overcome it...

I just saw Heart last week and Nancy said she wrote this about a male friend of hers.
I had always heard the lyrics as telling him off. Lines like "She's not good enough, for the likes of you." as her calling the guy arrogant.
Turns out she meant that literally. She was speaking to a good guy who kept going back to a woman who was bad for him.
