Could be. I never saw him perform this at any of the concerts I attended, but I’ve always loved this song. I saw a show a couple of years before he died where he said that all of his repertoire is kind of like a joke and he hopes that his fans get the punchline before it’s all said and done. He’s told so many stories about so many songs and often there are multiple stories to every song. I just never heard one for this. I knew he was friends with Jimmy Buffett but he sings about several Jimmys… I almost can see it because of the three water skis and the water bell. Picture in a picture show Jimmy is James Dean because he says James Dean went out to Hollywood and put his picture in a picture show. Now the kid with two first names… He probably changed the names to protect the innocent there.

Pretty edgy for the times and that's where the forbidden comes in. Jimmy is none other that Jimmy Buffett a.k.a Marvin Gardens. Just Google Steve Goodman's album "Someone Else's Trouble" and look at the cover photo. John Prine and Marvin Gardens a.k.a Jimmy Buffett standing side by side. That's also why you hear the more tropical background tune in the song. Without a doubt it's Jimmy Buffett.
