i suppose that space travel and cosmology is the religion of the future. spaceman is the modern day christ. this song spells out the turmoil of this cesspit of a planet, and this one narrator is fed up with the mundane ordure this planet has to offer. solution: find a new religion in the form of the ethereal and otherworldly. claustrophobia on a global scale, this guy really wants to get the hell of this carousel as we revolve the sun. intersesting use of the word 'man' in this song. is he saying 'spaceman' or 'space...man'?
Surely this is a parody of Bowie?
It made me think about 'Heavens Gate' - a quirky religious cult that committed collective suicide the year after this release. They made headlines at the time and could have inspired the lyrics. I love the song regardless of what it means.
i forgot to mention that images of kubrick's 2001 a space odyssey come to mind when hearing this song. "The sun and zenith rising ; Trying to take us all"- i can't but picture the sun rising above the monolithe around those primitive ape-like creatures. another thing i would like to say is that this song is excellent on all levels and i praise babylon zoo for their profound work.
Regarding your first post, I think that that was the main point of the song.... to paraphrase, "Mr Cosmologist, I would like to propel you into the outer reaches of the universe, dude."
I loved this song when it came out. shauncreaney is spot on with the meaning. It seems like the world is going to hell in a hand basket and it is time to hop onto a rocket and blast off in search of something new...
