Blood On The Motorway Lyrics
(sample)
And now...
Eternity.
(sample)
Be still now
I am with you
I am deep within you
You are at peace
You cannot be harmed
You will not suffer
Breathe deeply
Breathe in the healing love of the universe
And breathe out the sickness which has taken you
I am with you
(sample)
Its easy
Its like breathing
Its like a heartbeat
Its easy
I've not betrayed your ideals
Your ideals betrayed you
What are you gonna do?
Your eyes will not close
Your tongue barely speaks
But I can still feel you
I can still feel you
So come, come relax,
grin, let the changes in
Come on, come relax
Grin,
Let the laughter, let the laughter
Let the laughter begin
Well come on, relax,
grin, let the changes in,
Relax, grin, let the changes in
Let the changes in
Come on, come on relax
Time is done
The sun has gone
It's too late
Eternity has come
And now...
Eternity.
Be still now
I am with you
I am deep within you
You are at peace
You cannot be harmed
You will not suffer
Breathe deeply
Breathe in the healing love of the universe
And breathe out the sickness which has taken you
I am with you
Its easy
Its like breathing
Its like a heartbeat
Its easy
Your ideals betrayed you
What are you gonna do?
Your tongue barely speaks
But I can still feel you
So come, come relax,
grin, let the changes in
Come on, come relax
Grin,
Let the laughter, let the laughter
Let the laughter begin
Well come on, relax,
grin, let the changes in,
Relax, grin, let the changes in
Come on, come on relax
The sun has gone
It's too late
Eternity has come

I appreciate and love the imagery of the car crash others have posted. I think it would make a great music video.
I took a more general approach to my interpretation of the song. It might be a little rambling but I hope you get the idea of how I hear this song and the hope it conveys.
"and now eternity"
first verse ending in "I am with you": -everything is ok, you are infinite, you are in a process of healing -just breathe and soon everything will be OK. In the context of this mistake you made, it will all work it self out in time (eternity).
"its easy, ideals betrayed you, what are you going to do?": -an invitation to change yourself and what you value. what values did you over-prioritize to lead to this bad decision / mistake? -also saying it is not your fault, your ideals were filled with good intentions on your side, but they just werent realistic. they just werent what you really truly believe in your deepest self. you must now change your priorities and values in order to align your decisions and thoughts with your true self (or to not be "betrayed" again).... your emotional and spiritual truth.
"eyes dont close, tongue dont speak, i can still feel you": -this person can sense your guilt shame and suffering caused by this mistake, this split in your self. you dont say anything, but you also keep your eyes open (implying you cannot relax or sleep because of regret), this person can tell. and they want to help you heal and feel better and become better as a person.
let the laughter begin: -this person invites you to relax, forgive yourself, realize how silly and insignificant the entire situation is (especially when compared to eternity/infinity), grin, laugh, and most of all, let yourself begin to change. change your values, change your ideals.
its too late, eternity has come: -snap back to reality from this healing heaven and remember you did fuck up. time is done, the mistake is in the past. the sun is gone and you can’t go back in time and redo or undo what you did. its too late, eternity has come and it is your choice about whether it will be a heavenly eternity of healing and learning from your mistakes, or will it be a downward spiral of mistakes leading to more mistakes and fucking up.
overall: Make the decision. Do you choose heaven or hell? Both are within your grasp. And in reality, you can’t just sit around healing or feeling bad, you must change how you make decisions. You must actually do something different........ and don’t worry.... DON'T WORRY, because “It’s Easy, it’s like breathing, like a heartbeat”.
...also with the artist name "DJ Shadow" might be implying that all his work pertains to working with your own shadow in jungian terms. facing the parts of yourself you do not like, and becoming better through this confrontation and learning process.
Those are just my thoughts, and what do I know? What do you think?
Brilliant song this is, shame that not many people have heard of Shadow...
This song is currently being used in an O2 advert in the UK, shame that the people that make the music that is used in adverts don't get any credit - there ought to be some kinda of mini note at the bottom of the screen during adverts to say what the music is. I'm sure many people who have seen the advert would want to listen to this song, as it's brilliant.
Edited by random_monkey on February 26 2006, at 03:34PM

I absolutely love this song when i first heard it but like you said i didnt know who it was by. I adore DJ Shadow.
Definitely caught my ear when i first heard it. Love the drum and bass instrumental portion nearing the end. Great song to night drive in the rain to. Definitely a great song to represent Shadow. I'm suprised he hasn't gotten more recognition. Not too sure about the lyrics or their meaning but from the other songs I've heard by him, I think it's just a great use of abstracts. Perhaps something that ties in to the "Motorway" theme?
I absolutely ADORE the version on "IN tune and on Time" where he cuts in a vocal of Thom Yorke from "Rabbit in your Headlights" That's fried gold
It's neat, but this one pips it at the post for me
Because both this and Mashin on the Motorway have very similar title and have no silence barrier seperating them, I am going to assume that they are both part of one artistic expression. I think its about the difficulty of finding spiritual comfort in a modern society.
I was listening to this song driving one day and I thought it could be about someone dying in a car accident. Maybe I was looking a little too deep but when you listen to the music it could actually fit. The beat all the way thru is the persons heart beat, which stops at the end. The bells could be the sirens of the ambulance coming. Then when the music stops they are flat lining. The drums are the paramedics using the defibrillator to bring them back. The voice all theway thru is a combination ofthe people around them telling them "I am with you" like I am here its okay help is coming and telling them to breathe. They are only just hanging on so some of it is from the otherside telling them to "Relax let the changes in" Your eyes will not close Your tongue barely speaks But I can still feel you could mean they are dying, almost gone but who ever is with them wont let go. At the end of the song the beat stops and a long note like when someone flat lines plays. I dunno, as i said mayb looking too deep. But I was bored and on a long drive.
I'd say this is for candy kids and ravers. But that's just me, or at least that's just what I'd like to hear when on a roll.
i agree with Kastin's meaning of the song.. deep.. very deep:)
