So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Life is like the flame on the candles you have lit
A tiny light breaks the darkness, but of course
It always goes out
Always goes out
Enveloped in the darkness again
Watch the candles flicker
Watch them melt and burn
Baby-you'll never feel the fire!
*Everything you know is but a raindrop
of what is really out there (out there)
If what I know is a raindrop
The world must be a hurricane...Yeah
I'm blowing out the candles now
The darkness will again cloak me
And I'll settle in
Settle in
If I wasn't so afraid of death
I'd put a bullet through my head
Right this second (right this second baby)
*Everything you know is but a raindrop
of what is really out there (out there)
If what I know is a raindrop
The world must be a hurricane...Yeah
I'm afraid it's my fault
It must always be this way
Too fast to live
Too young to die
It's the suicide note I never wrote.
A tiny light breaks the darkness, but of course
It always goes out
Always goes out
Enveloped in the darkness again
Watch the candles flicker
Watch them melt and burn

Yeah I have never heard of this band or this song, but I wanted to comment. I think this song is about somebody wanting to trick his friend into writing a suicide note for him. He is just really lazy and would rather do stuff like watch TV and play in the "raindrops," (rain). The friend doesn't want to write the note because everytime he is about to sit down to write it, he has to take a "hurricane" of a diahrea. Its really sad if you read through the lyrics. 8(
