The Fitted Shirt Lyrics
When I was still growing up
And Dad head off to work
He put coat and tie on
Over a fitted shirt
Nothing else will fit right
Or seems so directly applied
Than fitted shirt hung on me
Fitted shirt alright
I long for the days
They used to say
Ma'am and yes sir
For now I'm going to find
Buttons for my
Dad's old used shirt
Fitted shirt
Fitted shirt
Been looking so long now
And no one's seen and no one's heard
But when I go out tonight
I'm going to put on a fitted shirt
One day it'll take
And they'll start to make
Shirts that fit right
Til then I suppose
I still got Dad's clothes
And that's alright
Fitted Shirt
Fitted Shirt
And Dad head off to work
He put coat and tie on
Over a fitted shirt
Or seems so directly applied
Than fitted shirt hung on me
Fitted shirt alright
They used to say
Ma'am and yes sir
For now I'm going to find
Buttons for my
Dad's old used shirt
Fitted shirt
And no one's seen and no one's heard
But when I go out tonight
I'm going to put on a fitted shirt
And they'll start to make
Shirts that fit right
Til then I suppose
I still got Dad's clothes
And that's alright

This is my FAVORITE Spoon song. I love the riff to this song. I think it's mainly about nostalgia (a common theme in Spoon's lyrics). The singer is nostalgic about the old days and memories of his father. He is also searching for something he can't find (Been looking so long now/And no one's seen and no one's heard) and his dad's fitted shirt is the only thing that brings him memory of what he used to love. Anyway, there's a few mistakes in the lyrics:
When I was still growing up And Dad'd head off to work He'd put coat and tie on Over a fitted shirt
Nothing else would fit right Or seem (sounds like "all seams" too) so directly applied The fitted shirt hung on me The fitted shirt alright
I long for the days They used to say Ma'am and yes sir For now I'm going to find Buttons for my Dad's old used shirt

Been looking so long now And no one's seen and no one's heard But when I go out tonight I'm gonna put on a fitted shirt

Pining for the days when things were actually made with pride & quality. Days when manners meant something. Today people think the world owes them a living for no reason.......people didn't always think that way. This song kicks ASS live. Probably their most amazing song live, hope they never stop playing it at concerts no matter how many albums they record.
Amazing song! It's the only song where the lyrics were written after they came up with the music. From what I heard in an interview, it just kind of came together, then Britt had to come up with lyrics. And in case no one's noticed, Britt likes to wear fitted shirts.
I see this song as him realizing how much he has in common with his father as he gets older.
It perfectly conveys the pleasant memories everyone has. His father's shirt hanging loosely on him as a child. It's silly things like that that often stick with us most. It's sentimental in the best possible way.
Plus, they really don't make shirts right anymore...especially for thin, tall people.
Definitely one of their best songs. By saying a little about a shirt Britt says a lot about wanting to be like his father. And he does like to wear fitted shirts. Great hearing this live last week in Brooklyn. Happy Fathers Day.
