I have this album, and I swear that the words I hear in the second verse are "ooh, I would love to stay", but live, they sing the other lyrics, and in the video they do, as well. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Does anyone else have this problem?!
Maybe they changed it on different versions of the album? I've only heard "you're so far away" on the album (digital) and live, and on youtube.

this song seems to be speaking to that relationship that gets problems, and things try to change as someone as always left holding the bag.

I need all the help I can get :) Not sure how I interpret this song, although it sounds as though someone is going through a really rough time ("everything hits at once"...could be problems at work; and school; with family; with money; etc) and s/he needs someone to be with him emotionally yet not actually with him. On a personal note, often when people need others the most is when they push them away. They feel weak and unlikable, so instead of welcoming loved ones...

On a personal note, often when people need others the most is when they push them away. They feel weak and unlikable, so instead of welcoming loved ones to comfort them (hold their hand; show a smile; provide a soft shoulder) they don't allow them into their private world. It makes no sense, but it is a part of human nature. I've done it myself, and it's due to false pride.
This is my favorite song off the "Girls Can Tell" album.

Lyrically, this is definitely one of Spoon's best and most mature songs, along with "Paper Tiger" and "Chicago at Night".
Spoon rocks the Casbah, especially live!
it's hard to pick the best off GCT, but it may be this one. the mellotron & the lyrics & his voice are just way out of league of basically ALL other rock music. but then again, the whole album is just way ahead of anything else out there made today.
