My personal belief is that the song is about the monologue of Love.<br /> <br /> The speaker of the song is Love itself which asserts what it believes must be happening to the listener.<br /> <br />

1. Losing trust - phase one<br /> The listener, whoever that may be, appears to have lost trust that he/she will ever find love, possibly due to the long delay. Love is trying to assert that it has not "forgot" about the listener:<br /> <br /> So you lost your trust<br /> And you never should have<br /> <br />
2. Taking cover from love - phase two<br /> The listener, cloyed by the waiting and finally resigned to the thought that he/she will never find love, is trying to actively protect himself/herself by avoiding any real life situation that might bring back the hurt and disappointment in love.<br /> Love, once again, is two steps ahead and asserts that no matter how hard you try to hide from me i will see you and find you eventually, at the right time so please don't lose trust:<br /> <br /> In a bullet proof vest <br /> With the windows all closed<br /> I'll be doing my best<br /> I'll see you soon<br /> <br />
3. Changing goals and sublimating - phase three<br /> The listener, now fully resigned to the idea that love, ever so desired, hasn't yet arrived, is trying to cope with the aftermath - it sets lower goals in personal relationships ("just friends"), all the while sublimating the need for intimate affection and affiliation with the love of friends:<br /> <br /> In a telescope lens<br /> And when all you want is friends<br /> I see you soon<br /> <br /> The last three lines might also be a hint from Love that it will arrive and find the listener exactly when he/she expects less, exactly when the trust has been lost and any hope vanished.
