Fall Down

Dude, this song is so about the 'life of the walking dead' of drug addicts. Maybe you need the perspective of an addict or someone who has been close to that lifestyle or known people in it to really see it, but if you read the lyrics with that in mind, I think it becomes almost unmistakeable. Their comming down off a high, out of dope, and out in public trying not to be obvious of their condition (maybe they just got pulled over by the cops).

What I love about Toad is that they're lyrics can mean more than one thing within the same framework, as in 'when will we fall down' might mean literally collapsing (maybe dying) from dope sickness or an overdose, or go to jail finally for good. 'Knowing you ain't got nothing left' can mean the desperation of having run out of dope or run out of options. 'Been too long this time' means they've pushed the envelope way too far and stayed srung out past the breaking point.

'She hates her life, her freinds her skin...' is all about the self-loathing addicts feel for the wreckage they've made of thier lives, and the bad associations with likewise dedegenerates (addicts, dope whores and biker dealers). Her 'reutation she can't mend' is about the immoral and humiliating comprimises she's made with her body for the sake of drugs that are well known to thier circle of dopers that fuels her escape deeper into addiction.

Annother Toad dual line is the one about 'someone always being there for bail' could be literal, or could mean there was always someone who could hook them up when they were desperate for more.

I always thought the song was a blend of two addicts hurtling towards rock bottom and could see the end rushing up to meet them, and/or the two of them at some dealer's house with nothing to pay with but her body, therefore: 'for a good friend, I was never there at all'.

I'm thinking this a team of bank robbers, doing it for the thrill again and again. "cover up your trembling hands" (so they don't see you scared too soon). "when will we fall down" (when will we get shot in one of these banks we keep robbing). References to bail and cheap thrills.

It could be most any thrill seeking behavior I suppose, but somehow this bank robbery imagery fits pretty well.

I can see how, looking closely with the lyrics, it is about a woman who feels her life and all the time with which she spends it is empty. However the chorus, "when will WE fall down," almost sounds like it's about when will mankind fall down. Not "when will she fall down," or "when will I fall down," "but when will we fall down?"

I think it's saying that her feelings are not unique, even though she feels that she may be alone. We are all living facades of life and all our insecurities and emptiness will catch up with us later It's only a matter of time before something goes wrong and we'll have a major shakeup or a nervous breakdown. Or maybe I'm reading a bit too deep and beyond, but I think the "when will WE fall down" is significant.

Fall of 94? And it still eludes me who has the issues in these lyrics,, he has trembling hands and she hates everything. 11 years before their time like Lemmonheads, marcy PG, and Violent Femmes.

When I hear this song, I think of my ex... how we always used to end things and then get back together... Now we've finally reached the point, after three years, when we realize that even though there's so much between us, it's still not what we need to keep us together. We see that we've finally fallen.

First things first, this song is legit. There is a CD that Toad put out with five songs on it, four of them acoustic and Fall Down is one of them. I think this song is about people being at the top and eventually coming down. I think "She" is just an example and not speaking of anyone in particular.

These verses say it all. They are saying you can be on top of the world one moment, but then you'll fall down.

Interpret it how you want, at the end of the day it's legit!

This song reminds me of Autumn. Brings me back to my youth, even though I don't think I heard this song back then. I love the guitar in this song. I think its about problems in early adulthood, turning to drugs and just waiting for it all to end, or perhaps the ending of a relationship.

This seems to be clearly inspired by the movie "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"

In a word, it seems to be about, desperation. Trying to keep on in a no win situation.

The lyrics don't seem to have been transcribed exactly right, but all the meaning is there, along with the clear references to the movie in the video.

Truly a great song!

The song sounds so much like my ex-wife and where I was mentally in the year leading up to the divorce. She was clearly not happy but wouIdn't admit it. I felt like I was stuck in indecision about divorce for a long time cause I knew it was over and I wouldn't admit that to myself. The good times never staying and cheap thrills fading away were the rare time we got along like we did at the beginning, and how the sex was trying to hold it together. 'When will we fall down' was that thought in the back of our minds that we were doomed ultimately, and we were just prolonging that. The chorus is delivered forcefully with the lyrics 'jump back' implying someone realizing they need to wake up, step back and look at things realistically. Been too long this time indicates the cycle of break up and make up being stretched too far. She hates her life etc.... described my ex so well. She constantly judged herself, was jealous and spiteful of her friends, and pushed others away hard enough to never recover that first impression. It continues with reference to the cycle of on/off and implies that neither is going to save it this time when it falls. The last bit is tricky: "For the last time conscience calls for a good friend I was never there at all" The subconscious had been calling for its 'good friend' to come to reason, and had been ignored until now.

WHAT???? Only one comment on this song??? This song is not about a relationship. This song is about a girl who puts on the face of a good time happy party girl but deep down is very unhappy.
