Death Valley Queen Lyrics
Death Valley queen, where have you been
Since they crowned you in glory
Filled your head with dreams
But it still goes to show in every desert
There's a rose that's bloomin' for all to be seen
I remember you well from that town
You did dwell with the face of an angel
In a dump hot as hell
When I asked for a kiss
You kindly dismissed
So I lead my poor heart to the slaughter
Tell me dear what did you fear
I'd do you no wrong though no stranger to sin
So Death Valley Queen go marry your King
Or an old maid you'll end up for certain
Off I did set, on my trail of regret
Where I thought of you now in your castle and crown
So I found me a whore with a face just like yours
After several gallons of porter
When I awoke, she had scampered I was broke
Laying cold in the bed with a well for a head
So Death Valley Queen go marry your King
Or an old maid you'll end up for certain
Then the ball dropped why everything fell by the way
As your teardrops were fallin' I forgot to say
That I have always loved you
Yeah, I have always loved you
Yeah, yeah I, I have always loved you
When I returned downtrodden and burned
There were Billy Goats grazing
Where once you'd be found
So I hung out to dry
On this limb for a lie
Take me back for I'm cursed on the mainland
Tell me dear what did you fear
I'd do you no wrong though no stranger to sin
So Death Valley Queen go marry your King
Old and lonely you'll end up for certain
So Death Valley Queen go marry your King
And a-rovin' I'll end up for certain
Since they crowned you in glory
Filled your head with dreams
But it still goes to show in every desert
There's a rose that's bloomin' for all to be seen
You did dwell with the face of an angel
In a dump hot as hell

This song...holy shit. It's just the best. the fuckin best. when he screams the last, "and i have always loved you!" it just pulls at my heart. i have this image of him walking, crying, out of the place, throwing a ring or flowers on the ground.
FM kicks MAJOR ass, and this just proves it.
Oh god.. how I love this song. It's just.. life. I think really everyone has been through this, and that is what makes the song so striking. There is so much in it. I've heard it lying on my bed, and I had to hear it again and again. I got up to read the lyrics, it took me like 2 hours that it made sense to me. At the beginning there are just two young people in a small village, he's loving her, but she doesn't respond his love. He gets drunken and tries to find a substitute for her, but that other girl leaves him the next morning, and he is alone again. in my opinion, the "ball" is the queens marriage. the queen is crying for joy, and it's the last chance for the lyrical I to express his love. That he didn't do it is getting him down. I guess everyone knows this feeling.. just: "God damned.. What had happened if i did something else?" In the last stanza the lyrical I returns to the village where both grew up, he goes to her old house, but there are only some grazing goats. What I like the most is the very end of the song. "And a-roving I'll end up for certain." This picture. The girl he loved, sitting in her castle, and him, an aroving beggar. There could not be a major gap. I think this is what the last verse is about. The girl moved away, and slow, but certain her past disappears, and only the memories of the lyrical I remain. It might be the fear to be forgotten by someone else, while you can not get him out of your brain.
I love this song so much. It's the best on Drunken Lullabies, just because Cruel Mistress leads into this so well. This has one of the best violin solos of their songs, I'm thinkin.

okay, i know i'm randomly going to every flogging molly song going, "this song kicks ass, i love it" but i really do like all their songs, and this one. The song about rejection. I also love how he screams "i have always loved you," but i also like the way he says "i found me a whore" it sounds more like "I found me a WHO er" yeah, i'm a loser
pogues are great too... yes the band played waltzing matilda!
I saw flogging molly in vegas a couple of months ago. right before they played this song, he said it was about his mother, she won some beauty pageant in las vegas in the 60's...
This is easilly one of FLogging Molly's top five songs. It's a really good song about heart break and "what could have been?" type feelings. There's also some jealousy thrown in...
whats a whore?
I'm not even going to lie, I'm really surprised you don't know that. A whore is another term (usually considered more offensive) for prostitute, someone who is payed for sexual acts.

Is it just me, or is the opening of this song strikingly similar to The Wild Rover?
