Everybody Gets What They Deserve Lyrics
Please don't tell
I never meant to hurt you though I didn't wish you well (and)
Please don't you tell
I don't know what I was thinking
This disease brings me to my knees
This disease kills me by degrees
Everybody gets what they deserve
But I could be wrong
Cause I could never live with me before you came along (and)
You made me whole
You crept in through the window of my soul
This disease brings me to my knees
This disease kills me by degrees
Everybody gets what they deserve
Maybe you've out grown
Silence on the phone
I can't keep this thing inside of me
This disease brings me to my knees
This disease kills me by degrees
Everybody gets what they deserve (x4)

This disease kills me by degrees

wow...that's certainly one interpretation...but that's DEFINITELY not the impression I got. I figure it's about a guy that doesn't pay enough attention to his girl. The line that you mention is about how she taught him to love himself...there's nothing sinister about it. The disease he mentions COULD be alcoholism, but I get the impression it's more about the depression he's feeling...or the dependency he feels towards her.
abusive to his girlfriend? but loves her? i dunno confusing song!
He's an abusive alcoholic, she's had enough. He's begging her to stay, because he's seen hope through the haze, but he lacks the will to change for the better.
"Everybody gets what they deserve... but I could be wrong, cause I could never live with me before you came along."
This line beautifully highlights the problem with finding yourself in another person... you're not fixing your own problems, you're just using that person to cover them up. When that cover starts to look thin, and you can't hide behind them anymore, you've got to find something else to hide behind...
