Clouds Lyrics
The clouds are here
They aren't up in the sky.
I cupped them with my hands
and reached up high.
I said to these clouds,
"no more am I blind.
I have to see straight
and that will make me unkind."
Visions of blue,
I'm angry, I'm wise.
And you, you're under cloudy skies.
Blue air I crave, blue air I breathe
They once chopped my heart the way you chop a tree.
Told to equate achievement with pain
I took their top prize and paid them back with rain.
Visions of blue
I'm angry I'm wise and you.
You're under cloudy skies.
Blue air I crave blue air I breathe
they once chopped my heart the way you chop a tree.
Told to equate Achievement with Pain
I stole their top prize and paid them back with rain.
Visions of blue I'm angry I'm wise and you.
You're under cloudy skies. Visions of blue
Preverse and strong and you.
You're under cloudy skies.
What I did once I now do everyday.
They aren't up in the sky.
I cupped them with my hands
and reached up high.
"no more am I blind.
I have to see straight
and that will make me unkind."
I'm angry, I'm wise.
And you, you're under cloudy skies.
They once chopped my heart the way you chop a tree.
Told to equate achievement with pain
I took their top prize and paid them back with rain.
I'm angry I'm wise and you.
You're under cloudy skies.
they once chopped my heart the way you chop a tree.
Told to equate Achievement with Pain
I stole their top prize and paid them back with rain.
You're under cloudy skies. Visions of blue
Preverse and strong and you.
You're under cloudy skies.
What I did once I now do everyday.

Beautiful song by a cruelly overlooked band.
Although the song itself sounds calming and upbeat, I think it's actually about a relationship in termoil.
The 'clouds' perhaps symbolise everything that is being hidden from the narrator by their partner, an indication of mistrust or infidelity. The colour blue also features heavily, whereas blue sky or 'air' can mean clarity, it can also symbolise depression or hurt, which I believe the narrator is suffering from. 'I stole their top prize and paid them back with rain' is maybe a nod to retaliation or a sense of punishing the person that has betrayed their trust.
Incredible... This song reminds me of city drives, clear days on the brink of haziness and being in a car on the way to boarding school, sitting in complete silence with my parents, no longer able to talk in the same way. Like many Go-betweens songs, it feels like a subtle loss of innocence, being both angry and wise, living under cloudy skies. A love lost, yet so close by.
