Hang On to Yourself Lyrics
Well she's a tongue twisting storm, she will come to the show tonight
Praying to the light machine
She wants my honey not my money she's a funky-thigh collector
Layin' on 'lectric dreams
Well come on, well come on, if you think we're gonna make it
You better hang on to yourself
But then we move like tigers on vaseline
Well the bitter comes out better on a stolen guitar
You're the blessed, we're the spiders from Mars
Well come on, well come on, if you think we're gonna make it
You better hang on to yourself
Ho
Well come on, well come on, if you think we're gonna make it
You better hang on to yourself
Well come on, well come on, if you think we're gonna make it
You better hang on to yourself
Come on, ah, come on, ah
Come on, ah, come on, ah
Come on, ah, come on, ah
Come on, ah, come on, ah
Come on, ah, come on, ah
Come on, ah, come on, ah
Come on, ah, come on, ah
Come on, ah, come on, ah
Come on, ah, come on, ah
Come on, ah, come on, ah
Come on, ah, come on, ah
I think this song is a simile for masturbation and the self-gratifying experience of being a Star. He's like saying that the Glamourous life is so fab that he might as well "Hang on to himself" because nobody else is worthy in a way. Very cocaine trendy!
~sigh~ this is another part of the epic of ziggy stardust(told by all the songs on this album) and this is essentially the band saying how they are doing good and telling the fans to come along for the ride, but hang on, because it will be tough; this theory obviously comes from the next song being ziggy stardust and the lines from there about the band getting restless under the leadership of ziggy
quick tangent: wow im amazed there was only 1 post on this song o_O
The images bowie is always coming up with are great
"But then we move around like tigers on vaseline"
"She's a tongue twisting storm, she will come to the show tonight Praying to the light machine"
This song is about trying not to loose yourself in the rush of fame. I think. Bowie can be very obligue.
If "she" is the audience and fans of the band, then this all about having a wonderful time slipping around in fame. The line "You're the blessed, we're the spiders from Mars" would be a reference to the messiah image of Ziggy and the Spiders from Mars. The blessed are, of course, the listener.
I always thought it was talking to a groupie. 'Cos she's a "collector layin' on 'lectric dreams."
This is a great song with a constant beat. He's saying that it's going to be tough and you better hang onto yourself. Wow...what a great song...
Of course, these arent the album lyrics. These are the original lyrics or alternate lyrics Bowie messed around with.
Id say, the original lyrics are basically saying that there is going to be that one groupie girl who gets around all the bands and is lookin for some hot sex. She will take them backstage because she's looking for another notch on her belt (funky thigh collector) and will have her way with them even though they are sloppy and messy (tigers on Vaseline) and she will appreciate every moment because of the starstruck feelings she has (you're the blessed, were the spiders from mars)
These are the proper lyrics:
Well she's a tongue twisting storm, she will come to the show tonight Praying to the light machine She wants my honey not my money she's a funky-thigh collector Layin' on 'lectric dreams
[Chorus] So come on, come on, we've really got a good thing going Well come on, well come on, if you think we're gonna make it You better hang on to yourself
We can't dance, we don't talk much, we just ball and play But then we move like tigers on vaseline Well the bitter comes out better on a stolen guitar You're the blessed, we're the spiders from Mars
[Chorus x 3] Come on, ah, come on, ah (repeat ad inf.)
Love the punk sound of this song. You can't tell me Bowie didn't directly influence the punk movement. Brilliant.
