I Believe In You Lyrics
Hear it in my spirit
I've seen heroin for myself
On the street so young laying wasted
Enough ain't it enough
Crippled world
I just can't bring myself to see it starting
Tell me how I fear it
I buy prejudice for my health
Is it worth so much when you taste it
Enough there ain't enough hidden hurt
A time to sell yourself
A time for passing
Spirit
How long
I've seen heroin for myself
On the street so young laying wasted
Enough ain't it enough
Crippled world
I just can't bring myself to see it starting
Tell me how I fear it
I buy prejudice for my health
Is it worth so much when you taste it
Enough there ain't enough hidden hurt
A time to sell yourself
A time for passing

When Mark sings the line:
'A time for passing' (especially 'passing'), followed by the organ, it breaks my heart. There's so much sadness, I already wanna cry for all the grief I have to face in the future.
@Seressevic agree with you so completely on this. it's a wrench sensation, feeling these thoughts- the song is already such a gorgeous lament- then these lines show up. to me together they mean Participation (selling one's 'self') and Non-participation ("passing") in The Game.

It's indeed anti heroin but it's also about the 'opportunity' to not to have to face reality anymore. He wants others to convince him heroin is bad, but he knows it's just prejudice...as he never tasted it himself.
Actually, it was written for his brother Ed who died after years of heroin abuse. He is desperately trying to understand why he (Ed) needed it & the pain he felt when his brother was on drugs.
This song and Inheritance are probably the best songs ever written. The soulful simplicity of these songs is brilliant. Remember they were written years ago and they are still masterpieces. Do you think you'll ever hear anything so peaceful and moving ever again? Good luck....these songs are amazing.

BTW...it sounds like it's about the vulnerability of mankind and the need for guidance and faith in God.

The Bass in this song is amazing.
You really have to hear this one to believe it. The sound of the organ towards the end, and that repetition of "Spirit..." It will haunt you.
@eugenie Apparently it was even worse (better) on versions Mark discarded- a larger number of choir voices, with a longer/richer section in the song. According to the housekeeper, she regularly wept it was so incredibly lovely.

This is a song that I have loved for as many years as I can remember. It's all about the inability to deal with the realities of life as it stands, and trying to duck below the surface with chemicals to just simply deal with what is going on. I also feel it's about accepting death - welcoming it almost as the purest route from the pain of being alive. Of course, i could be wrong. But the fact remains that Mark Hollis is as close as we have got to a genius in the last 30 years in songwriting...
Even the title of this song is packed with so much emotion.
"I believe in you..." It's as if he's trying to console someone.

like his beloved brother's ravaged spirit?

Do life, do music; don't need drugs. Angels sing in this one.
"I buy prejudice for my health"
Prejudice against addicts conserves health in society. Drugs are shit.
And the addicts do not only pay with his or hers health they also purchase other people prejudice. Worst deal ever.
As an old alcoholic (heavy drinking from 2012-2017) I can tell you that it is a great eye-opener in life when no one on any level in society show you any respect or listen to your rantings.
It is like being alone on the moon.
Do not buy other peoples prejudice.
Mark Hollis has stated in interviews that this is an anti heroin song.
