All I Need Is A Miracle

It'a about an insecure man who thinks being tough and harsh is manly. He was also too proud to admit he could ever make a mistake. Now the relationship is over, he regrets how he behaved and that he didn't value the relationship.

He promises f he catches up with her again (she's obviously moved on), he will do it right. Will he? Depends if he has really changed. Anyway, he realises it will be a miracle if she does come back, presumably because she is now with someone who treat her right.

I think most of us have at some point in our life, treated someone less respectfully than we should have. And so often it is only too late that we realize that we were at least as wrong as the other person.

While he says at the end he would love (presumably) her for the rest of his life I'm not so sure that this is really what he would do. The relationship he describes in the rest of the song seems like one that should have been ended but in a much kinder and respectful way. Rather than actually breaking up with her, in his mind he already checked out so he kept trying to push her away. The song is an admission that he blamed her for everything and never accepted responsibility for any of their problems.

Don't rag on Mike, man! Dude was in Genesis. I think it may be a bit of a wistful reference to not being with Genesis anymore. They made great music. Hell, Peter Gabriel was the original frontman, and Phil just the drummer.

Why all the hate? 1985/86, you all would have been singing along with it. At least you can understand the lyrics (cough cough RAP cough cough).

He took her for granted, was arrogant, and treated her as optional. But now that she's gone, he realizes that his life isn't as good and he wants to prove it.

This is the big, stupid, a-hole mistake I made put to song. I did every word and every deed described in here to my one true love and lost her. This was 36 years ago. I still miss her every waking second of every day of the rest of my miserable, lonely life.
