A God in an Alcove Lyrics

Go and look for the dejected once proud
Idol remembered in stone aloud
Then on coins his face was mirrored
Take a look it soon hath slithered
To a fractured marble slab, renunciation clad
His nourishment extract from his subjects
That mass production profile

He's a God- in- in an alcove

Once he spread the rain
So they dreamt in vain
Once he spread the wheat
Had made garlands for his feet
Until the lily poet of our times
Horizoned on the line
Love became the in theme then
Opposing fakers thrice by ten
Don't perceive his empty plea
That redundant effigy

He's a God- in- in an alcove

Take in view his empty stool
What's left is satin cool
Clawing adornment for his crimes
They saw they had to draw the line
So they sent him far away
So they sent him far away
To a little alcove
To a little alcove
All alone

He's a God, a God

Now I am silly
Now I am silly
Silly, silly, silly, silly
Silly

Seems like the old gods of past civilisations. Most appropriately the fall of Paganism to Christianity. Although Wonder Ned's theory is also plausible. The whole 'Alcove' thing works, the religions of old are still there but pushed aside into little alcoves.

'Love became the in theme then'

With the fall of Paganism, sex was immoral.

The rest of it is pretty obvious if you take my theory and apply it.

Except for 'Oh I am Silly' Perhaps Bauhaus put that in for shits. This is my favourite song. I EFFING LOVE THIS SONG

I love this song. I think its about false profits. It could also be about christ. Beautiful lyrics. God bless Bauhaus!

Personally, I think the last two verses are about Lenny Bruce

An excellent song from the equally excellent 1980 album In the Flat Field. It seems the words are on a par with poetry, since they stand alone beautifully. For some reason it always makes me think of the last official Roman god (not counting the deified Emperors and Empresses) Antinous...I dunno, probably just me though.

Really, I hate live versions but for this one I have to change my mind. It's so much better. The original one kinda bores me, but the live version has got more post-punk sound which is perfect for me. I really love it.
