A Fire Burns Lyrics

The rusty stream of dawn completes
The scenes where cars once crawled these streets
A face against the moving sky
Brings back an alien hope
Just like they said to me
Keep your heart inside your coat

Well there's muddy shoes outside your door
Is anybody home I ask once more
A silver-plated jet comes home
But the map leads her astray
Just like they said to me
Find your heart and lose your way

A fire burns inside me
The snow still falls in flakes
The reins around a horse's throat
Turn into a lake
And people so familiar
Their words are in my mind

I read an interview with Steve Kilbey once where he admitted that the lyrics in the first few Church albums didn't mean anything. They were made up to sound deep and psychedelic. Great songs though.

....with decades ( hate to think of that) of listening to The Church's music, I find it more comforting and relevant in taking a line or two and finding meaning in the smaller parse rather than the inscrutable whole. So many times these one or two lines come to me in everyday settings....many a time I've come walking home in the wee hours of late night/early morn "rusted stream of dawn" , with deserted roads "where cars once crawled these streets"........et al, etc. Even when I can't grasp what the lines mean, invariably they are at the very least poetic; I've enjoyed and appreciated the music through the years
