Tusk Lyrics

Why don't you ask him if he's going to stay
Why don't you ask him if he's going away
Why don't you tell me what's going on
Why don't you tell me who's on the phone

Why don't you ask him what's going on
Why don't you ask him who's the latest on his throne

Don't say that you love me
Just tell me that you want me

Tusk

Just say that you want me
Don't tell me that you --

Tusk

one of the fan site's has an interpretation of the song, and here's what I got out of it..................... Right after Lindsey broke up with Stevie, she had an affair with Mick Fleetwood (who was still married). They didn't tell Lindsey about it, but he still knew about it. So whenever he says "why don't you ask him..." he's wondering why Mick's wife hasn't been more suspicious, and whenever he says "why don't you tell me..." he is refering to himself and stevie. The site also said that Mick used to refer to his manhood as his tusk, which if this was a way for Lindsey to get back at stevie and mick, then that meaning of the word tusk would fit well...

well.. maybe you have a point.. but I was compelled to look up the meaning of "Tusk" when at my daughters high school homecoming game last night the marching band started playing Tusk... love the song. My friend and I were wondering the meaning ourselves.. Penis is what I found. So.. there you have it.

hmmm.. that link doesn't bring you right to the page. Here is what it says:

The "Tusk" is slang for penis, so the song is basically about sex. When Stevie Nicks heard the album was going to be called Tusk, she objected, but Mick Fleetwood really wanted to use the title, so he ignored her and she dropped the subject.

Stevie Nicks recalled to Mojo in 2015: "I didn't understand the title, there was nothing beautiful or elegant about the word 'tusk.' It really bought to mind those people stealing ivory. Even then, in 1979 you just thought,...

This song is pure MALE. It shows the male fears of both abandonment and mistaking sex for love. The tusk is a horn that also signifys "male". It could also be saying, I don't want emotional entanglements as they are often painful and unrequited so just let me me be the one to "do you".

Half of the song is cocaine paranoia.

The other half is an inside joke (the band had started to refer to a penis as a "tusk" after seeing a phallic-shaped elephant tusk while on tour).

It's all set to the USC Trojan Marching Band playing in an empty Dodger Stadium. Why? Why not? Fleetwood Mac were the biggest band in the world, and they weren't going to rest on their laurels...at least Buckingham wasn't. He was going to push the envelope and see what they could do. The album itself is brilliant, but what amazes me even more is that this song, as bizarre and surreal as it is, was actually a Top 10 hit late in 1979.

Great song, better album.

The confidence that the band received from Rumors lead to the excesses that is Tusk; but history (and repeated listens) has proven Tusk to be one of the greatest rock albums over the last 30 years.

At the time Tusk - as used by the male members of the band - was s slang for the male member. it is a very male song full of jealously and male lust. Quite sexual actual. When Stevie heard they were going to name the album Tusk, "Rumour" had it, she wanted to quit.

I like the Mick Fleetwood interpretation. It fits chronologically and if I'm not mistaken the drummer's seat is usually referred to as the "throne." It's not one-to-one, but it makes sense.

From Wikipedia: The name for the album Tusk was inspired by a giant mammoth tusk in the museum of a small town called Saffron Walden, in Essex, England. The band saw it while touring and "tusk" became a running joke over the tour.
