Quiche Lorraine Lyrics

The skies are charcoal grey,
It's a dreary downtown day,
But at the end of my 40 foot leash,
Is my little friend Quiche.
Quiche La Poodle is her name
And having a good time on a crummy day is our game.

Quiche Quiche Lorraine
Quiche Quiche Lorraine

Everyday I take her out. Yea!
She runs around, she shouts out and barks, Yea!
Cause she's a good doggie
She's a sweet, sweet, sweet PUPPY! Arf Arf
And I know she'll stick by me, Yea! Arf Arf

Oh no! Here comes a Great Dane
Drivin' down the lane
Quiche, Quiche, Quiche come back here;
Don't leave me.
I'll go insane.
I'll go insane.

How do you like that?
Has anybody seen a dog dyed dark green.
About two inches tall, with a strawberry blonde fall;
Sunglasses and a bonnet
and designer jeans with appliques on it?
The dog that brought me so much joy
Left me wallowing in pain.
Quiche Lorraine.

I'll show her!
Do you see the key in my hand?
I'm gonna throw it in the lake.
Yea, you've been so rotten to me,
You take the cake.
I'm just gonna lock the door to your kennel,
and just you try and come back to me.
Yea, you'll see.

Quiche Quiche Lorraine You mangey mutt.
Quiche Quiche Lorraine I'm talking about Quiche!
Quiche Quiche Lorraine Quiche Lorraine!

Did she run away because she objected to Fred's canine fashion sense?

I'm thinking another "line" of interpretation is this song is about animal abuse and the animal gets free of it's abusive owner who now feels bad about the treatment after the dog runs away.

The first two verses cover how the dog and her owner's relationship is perceived initially from the outside. The dog and her owner are running around town, supposedly having fun together, like you'd expect from a good pet/pet owner relationship, Then one day the dog gets loose of it's owner after finding herself a "mate", and the dog is lost forever, probably to a new owner - and the dog's real owner is sad.

The second two verses cover what is REALLY going on.- the poor dog was dyed dark green, dressed up in (presumably uncomfortable for a dog) clothing, The owner calls her a mutt, throws the key to her kennel in the lake, and abandons her in her crate - exposing the owner's strange issues that lead to this kind of treatment....for the dog just being what she is, a dog.

I always took it as a metaphor. Quiche is the narrator's girlfriend that ran off with someone else (possibly a big Scandinavian man). Wouldn't be the first time an errant lover was described as a dog.

One time before performing this song, Fred commented it was "about a relationship that went to the dogs. In other words, Quiche Lorraine was a woman that loved the singer and then did him wrong. On another level, at the time this was released, there was also a book out called "Real Men Don't Eat Quiche." The title may be a reference to that.

@quamp "Real Men Don't Eat Quiche" didn't come out until 1982, so, unless Fred had a time machine, he probably wasn't writing about it in 1980.

Also, Fred was never particularly interested in the 80s stereotypes of masculinity that book was about. 50s stereotypes of masculinity, sure, those are funny, but that's a different story.

Also, there is almost certainly no woman who done Fred wrong. Did you somehow miss fact that Fred is gay? Nobody in his life did. He's talked about how he tried to come out at 14 but everyone already knew.
