Dance This Mess Around Lyrics
Remember when you held my hand
Remember when you were my man
Walk talk in the name of love
Before you break my heart
Think it over, think it over
Roll it over in your mind
Why don't you dance with me
I'm not no Limburger
Just a limburger
Dance this mess around
Dance this mess around, 'round, 'round
Everybody goes to parties
They dance this mess around
They do the Shu-ga-loo
Do the Shy Tuna
Do the Camel Walk
Do the Hip-o-crit
Ah-Hippy Hippy forward Hippy Hippy
Hippy Shake, Hippy Shake
Oh-it's time to do 'em right
Hey now, don't that make you feel a whole lot better?
Huh?
I say, don't that make you feel a whole lot better
What you say?
I'm just askin'
Shake-Bake-Shake-Bake
Everybody goes to parties
They dance this mess around
They do all 16 dances
Do the Coo-ca-choo
Do the Aqua-velva
Do the Dirty Dog
Do the Escalator
Ah-Hippy Hippy forward Hippy Hippy
Hippy Shake, Hippy Shake
It's time to do 'em right
Hey! Fred, now don't that make you feel a whole lot better now?
Huh?
Say, don't that make you feel a whole lot better?
What you say?
I'm just askin'
Yeah, yeah, yeah...
Stop!
Dance on over
Yeah, yeah
Dance, dance, dance this mess around
Dance this mess around
Shake, shake-a-bake shake
Shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, shake
Dance this mess around
Yeah, yeah, yeah........
Remember when you were my man

First they ask us to name all 52 girls and only give us a couple dozen names, then they tell us to do all 16 dances and only tell us 9 of them. And later, on the B-side of the album, they only name 8 of the 9 planets. And it goes even beyond the B-52s—Cindy skips 4 when counting to 8 for Martini Ranch. Why does she hate the Count from Sesame Street?
This song means to me...that I want a drug that makes me think like the B-52's. Its a strange alien and deeply simplistic place that I want to live in. and I dont even know why.
Just brilliant guitar on this track - and the keyboard and vocals match it perfectly.
The first half is sung from the point of view of someone heart-broken, desperately wanting their man back. "Limburger" is like a smelly person, so she's saying, "there's nothing wrong me (so come back)" and then, "there's something wrong with me", which is her self-doubt coming back.

I think you have this right. It's about sex and unrequited love. "Remember when you held my hand?"

He doesn't do that anymore. They aren't physical any longer.

Remember how we used to be? Do what we used to do (make love). "Walk and talk in the name of love" Let us do it, you're going to break my heart because we're not physical any more.

Then the song talks about how everybody else...
Then the song talks about how everybody else is doing it so why aren't you doing it with me?
"Everybody goes to parties They dance this mess around They do all sixteen dances They do the Shu-ga-loo Do the Shy Tuna Do the Camel Walk Do the Hip-O-Crit "
Everybody is doing it, they find it easy. They make love in different positions. The different dances being the different ways to make love.
The whole song is about this. Doing it, making you feel loved, getting it done and making you feel better. It's about an angry partner who doesn't get to make love with their partner any more.
Her voice reminds me a little bit too much of Patti Smith's, especially in the beginning. There is something about women yelping that I like. I guess that's why I make my mom scream all the time. Anyways, this song does it for me. Totally loving the vocals. Idk who it is though. Anyone?

It's Cindy that (wonderfully) sings the intro.

These are the thoughts of a woman to a man who isn't receptive to her, but once was. It drifts from her feelings of unrequited love to a rather abstract meditation on how people meet and interact, which is rather whimsical and humorous, to cut the pain of the main topic.
One possible error in the lyrics, or a mishearing on my part… I think she may be saying, "I'm not no Limburger. Just a limber girl." E.g., she's not something repulsive (Limburger cheese is known for a powerful smell) but a really good (limber) dancer. I thought this was a clever pun in the lyrics, but it's not distinct enough for me to be sure.
@rikdad - this is a PERFECT assessment! I was thinking something along these lines and now that I have read this, you have given me a little more insight. Well done.

@rikdad101@yahoo.com I never thought of that, always thought repeating Just a limburger was a bit strange. Just a limber girl is brilliant!

I also always thought after "before you break my heart" it wasn't "think it over" but "Casanova".

when I hear upbeat, relentlessly happy music...I dunno...it makes me feel kinda bitter.
but it's impossible not to smile when hearing this song

They ain't happy in this song. She isn't anyway 'cos she's not getting it from her man anymore.
