And yes, PeopleEveryday, it is definitely a reference to the acid tests. Openly mocking, more than a reference, actually. Not sure who the gangsters are though.
the merrry pranksters and the hells angels actually have a fairly intertwined history. maybe that's where he was headed. it's malkmus, though. his songs don't point directly to anything, really. they paint a portrait of a perspective.
