Silver Jet Lyrics
There's a still in the night
a tuneless moonlight
just the I-need-you-and-heres-why of
snorin Gords and Cheryls
there's a heron outside
in violet light
there's an urge to go, a shadow,
a heightened air of peril
your heart jumps to
and my heart jumps too
I think to myself, 'I dont really know my heart.'
and as you whisper, 'me too'
a silver jet roars overhead
rocks the nocturne all everglade n' grey sheers
silver jet, so far off already
ya fought the hot spurs off all the way to Cape Spear
it's quiet again
when a car like Big Ben
it's radio dopplerin' '...' and for all you
Gregory Peck fans...
-Let us now praise Famous Men-
to take some pressure off the wondrous to fight' and
your heart jumps to
and my heart jumps too
as if the Wolves of Northumberland
themselves
were rumored to be en route
silver jet, way overhead
yer an archipelago, a satellite,
a green star
silver jet, so far off already
with your I-need-you-and-heres-why
flying to the next part
your heart jumps to
and my heart jumps too
Im' thinking to myself,'packing,
is a secret heart'
and as you whisper, 'me too'
silver jet roars overhead
silver jet flying to the next part
silver jet so far off already
silver jet, a satellite, a green star
silver jet way overhead
silver jet evergladed grey sheers
silver jet so far off already
silver jet Clayquot Sound to Cape Spear
a tuneless moonlight
just the I-need-you-and-heres-why of
snorin Gords and Cheryls
there's a heron outside

Dear Dropkick,
Well, you have further proven to me that you know don't know shit about shit. The "In Violet Light" album was copyrighted in 2002 shit for brains!!! Phantom Power was released in 1998 and Music @ Work was released in 2000. For claiming to be such a Hip fan, you don't seem to know the chronology behind their albums. I tend to agree with McJackM because he went to the horse's mouth. Like I said before, you have a right to voice your stupidity, but I also have the right to inform you of your jackassery. So, drift and die and let the saner parts of the human equation speak their piece.
Thank you for your time and attention.

I am either thinking a comet. It could simply mean a jet flying overhead letting loose that long trail of whatever. Silver Jet seems like a straightforward song in some fashion.
I talked to Gord Downie about this song after a concert. Although no Hip song is about one specific theme or event, this song was inspired by the events of September 11.
Hmm.. I've always thought this song was about Gord having to leave his wife to go on tour with the band. He said before the performing this at a recent canada day concert "This is about a silverjet that keeps fuckin' things up." The line "packing is a secret art", is wrong in the posted lyrics. I think he's referring to the fact that he doesn't like his wife to see him packing, cause she gets sad. And well, both times it says "as you whisper 'me too'" a silverjet roars overhead.. he's on the jet.. he's gone.. not getting time to really be with her... that's what i thought anyway.
I have to agree with both Mcjackm and Oxejin, i think the song has to do with Gord always having to leave his wife, and after 9/11, it would make it even harder, knowing what could happen.
I think of this song as just an expression of a feeling that he, (Gord) can't really explain/express all too well...."It's like a silver jet...." and so on :) It's cool, when you think about it that way.....sorta almost like a feeling of "love" Gord can't explain, but think's it's friggin' amazing! :)
Thinking about if it is in fact inspired by 9/11... I was 11 then, and I remember since Bush declared war, I'd hear planes going over and feared they would bomb us. Really creepy time it was.
OK here's the deal.... I think its either about a war or some soccer tournament.. I can't see it being 9/11 cause there are too many night references in the song and 9/11 began at 9am... I have e-mailed Gordon Downie in hopes he will shed some light on this subject... I will not keep any secrets.
I do know for sure that whatever it is took place in Canada cause "Clayquot Sound to Cape Spear" is from BC to Newfoundland... so that gives us a hint.
Besides that, what's with all the insults... are you all Americans or something... sheesh! My poor country it turning on itself... that's not what Canada is all about, C'mon!!!!!
I will post back when I have an actual answer!
No idea what the song means, but Hotspur was Earl of Northumberland and a character in Henry IV Part I. He led a revolt in the 14th century.
