I've heard that the lyric, which is written by Danny Kirwan, is about Danny's childhood.. and about how his father left him and his mother when he was just a kid. And how Danny's mother took are care and supported him in life, witch school and his music..

But "the child of mine" is actually Danny's child. He became a father in very young age.. and he swore to his child that he would never leave, as his father did.
