London, Can You Wait? Lyrics

My kith and kin
I have sinned
I didn't hear the siren, or see him giving in
My kith and kin
I have sinned, again
And he said
"London, can you wait
For all the things I have to say
London can you wait".

My kith and kin
I have sinned
The alarm rang loud, the lights were on
I didn't see a thing
My kith and kin
Death just waked in, again
And he said
"London, can you wait
For all the things I need to say
How long can you wait?".

I was having the time of my life.
So why did you have to die?
I'm lost
Again.

Its a great song. And the lyrics seem to be in reference to a bank robbery or something similar. But whats it actually talking about?

" a bank robbery"??

This song is about the death of a friend and in particular about feeling guilt about not seeing the warning signs that this friend was ill ("the alarm rang loud, the lights were on", "I didnt hear the siren"). And then the feeling of being lost again when this friend passes away.

A friend dies and this should have been foreseeable. So I take it that this could either be addiction, poor health, or whatever.

In the UK, London is the place you go to if you want to make something of yourself. Become star or be a somebody. To those who live outside London, the city can have almost a mythic quality.

So as the friend is dying he say "London, can you wait?" He doesn't believe that what's happening to him is the end. Just a minor setback. He still has dreams to fulfill. He will get there eventually. It just might take a bit longer.

Even as he's dying, he still hold out hope of fulfilling his dreams and making something of himself. Although we know that never happens.
