This song is so deep, even with its simplicity, because it reflects on the thoughts that run through the minds of people who have to live with the stigma of being different, or (especially) sick. I love it. It's just a pity that the man who wrote all of these incredible songs couldn't be around to see the true glory of his Broadway presentation.
This song is actually based off of something that Jonathan Larson heard at an AIDS meeting that he went to wih his best friend cause his best friend has AIDS. A guy stood up and said, "I'm not afraid to die, and I'm not afriad to leave everyone behind, but I am afriad of losing my dignity." And he turned it inot this beautifuyl song.
I don't see how anyone could find this sappy. It's honestly how some/most people feel when they're dealing with something as life changing (obviously) and scary as aids.
I don't even know if I worded that without sounding idiotic, but it just shocks me that one would describe this as "sappy".
What the heck does it mean? No one wrote about it yet... What does it mean to lose dignity
I agree completely with rockenplay. This song is the perfect song, in my opinion. And the way the chords work out is simply impressive and mind-boggling. I saw a copy of the score recently and it still drives me insane. It's simplicity makes it so complex. I hope that the movie vesion of RENT gives it the respect it deserves. And the presentation of this piece is just as amazing as Jonathan Larson would've wanted it.
if u dont know the lyrics to THIS... youre challenged :D otherwise amazing song!! no matter how many times it repeats its so true to life.. just like the rest of RENT
i love this song...this is one of my favorite songs in the movie.
based on what ive seen on the movie... this song MAKES the movie. perfection, no need for more lyrics. by replaying it's just like a realisation in all the confusion some might have at that point of the film. greatgreatgreaat/ A+!
i dont really like this one. kinda corney. when i watched the movie for the first time i stopped it at this song cause it was so sappy. thank god i gave this musical another chance though cause i luv it
