And we stare each other down
Like victims in the grind
Probing all the weakness and
Hurt still left behind and we cry
The tears of pearls
We do it. Oh we do it.

Is love really the tragedy the way you
Might describe?
Or would a thousand lovers
Still leave you cold inside?
Make you cry
These tears of pearls

All these mixed emotions
We keep locked away like stolen pearls
Stolen pearl devotions we
Keep locked away from all the world

Your kisses are like pearls,
So different and so rare
But anger stole the jewels away
And love has left you bare,
Made you cry
These tears of pearls

Well I could be the tired joker
Pour my heart to get you in
Sacrifice my happiness just so I could win
Maybe cry
These tears of pearls

All these mixed emotions
We keep locked away like stolen pearls
Stolen pearl devotions we
Keep locked away from all the world

We twist and turn where angels burn
Like fallen soldiers we will learn
Once forgotten, twice removed
Love will be the death
The death of you

All these mixed emotions
We keep locked away like stolen pearls
Stolen pearl devotions we
Keep locked away from all the world

this totally used to be my song, when i was heartbroken and i wouldn't let anybody see my real emotions, and i was afraid of love. it's so well written...

This song fascinates me -like most SG songs- because of its vocabulary...I felt overwhelmed by how different their songwriting was from the rest of pop bands-singers, I could actually find it a challenge to try to understand the words and sing along. It's a heartfelt song, still an uptempo one, but it doesn't mean it isn't a painful one. My favourite lines: "We twist and turn where angels burn Like fallen soldiers we will learn that once forgotten, twice removed love will be the death... the death of you"

I have to admit, this song is pretty hard to figure out, but if anything I think it's about how we all hurt eachother in some way and it's like a cycle. Or we demand that others should open up to us when we also hide our emotions from them, kinda like being hypocrits. I hope I spelled that right or atleast close enough.

Lovers at odds--instead of reconciling differences, they merely hurt each other further, not wanting to admit that they still love each other, knowing it's a sick cycle, kind of how ladynausea discussed. I believe that crying "tears of pearls" might also be a play on crocodile tears. Pearls are beautiful, lush, rare, etc. Crying them seems to be a waste for two people who love each other, that it's just for show, and they are unnecessary.

Well, its 2012 and we still listen to this song. I have never heard such a bitter lyrics ever. For me Tearls of Pearls is the song that describes an affair between two strong people, who will never admit that they are fallen soldiers. Love will be the death of you also grabbed my attention. If these 2 have their love, something wrong will happen. This is like having an affair while married or simply trying to break all the clishes, but you cant.
