Q&A
In This Town Lyrics
I've known you
Known you for a long time
And i've seen you fade
And i've seen you shine
And you're such
Such a good example
Of falling down at all the weddings and holidays
Every face in this town reminds me of something i'd rather forget
Every face in this town reminds me of falling down
Every face in this town reminds me of something i'd rather forget
Every face in this town reminds me of falling down
And you're such
Such a good example
Cuz i know you're a lot like me
Every face in this town reminds me of something i'd rather forget
Every face in this town reminds me of falling down
Every face in this town reminds me of something i'd rather forget
Every face in this town reminds me of falling down
And you built a ship
Built it in a bottle
And then we watched it roll away
Watched it roll away
Watch it roll away
Known you for a long time
And i've seen you fade
And i've seen you shine
And you're such
Such a good example
Of falling down at all the weddings and holidays
Every face in this town reminds me of falling down
Every face in this town reminds me of something i'd rather forget
Every face in this town reminds me of falling down
Such a good example
Cuz i know you're a lot like me
Every face in this town reminds me of falling down
Every face in this town reminds me of something i'd rather forget
Every face in this town reminds me of falling down
Built it in a bottle
And then we watched it roll away
Watched it roll away
Watch it roll away

OK, this one... I think it's sung from the point of view of someone who left the small town his family lived in because he didn't like them anymore. "Falling down at all the weddings and holidays" seems to me to be that annoying relative that a lot of families have, the one who's always getting drunk and falling down.
He goes back to town every once in a while because it is his family, but he can't stand it because everyone in the town brings back all the bad memories.
I think the lines about building a ship in a bottle is about maybe things were better when the singer was young, and building a ship is a metaphor for the kinds of things a kid might do with his parents, and then how it rolled away is how they drifted apart.
