Do You Remember The First Time? Lyrics
You say you've got to go home
'Cause he's sitting on his own again this evening
And I know you're gonna let him bore your pants off again
Oh now it's half past eight, you'll be late
You say you've never been sure
Though it makes good sense for you to live together
Still you bought a toy that can reach the places he never goes
And now it's getting late, he's so straight
Do you remember the first time?
I can't remember a worse time
But you know that we've changed so much since then, oh yeah, we've grown
Now I don't care what you're doing, no I don't care if you screw him
Just as long as you save a piece for me, oh yeah
You wanna go home
Well at least there's someone there that you can talk to And you never have to face up to the night on your own
Jesus, it must be great to be straight
Do you remember the first time?
I can't remember a worse time
But you know that we've changed so much since then, oh yeah, we've grown
Now I don't care what you're doing, no I don't care if you screw him
Just as long as you save a piece for me, oh yeah
You wanna go home..

'Straight', as Jarvis uses it, tends to have a meaning more like 'square', or otherwise un-groovy. 'it must be great to be straight', in this context, would refer to his envying the security that she feels, now that her life has become more dull and routine after settling down.
I dont agree wtih you guys. I think the song is about him with this chick. the line i dont remeber a worse doesn't nessiceraly mean it was bad he's just saying it got better and better. and now that they're through she gets better sex with a dildo then her husband casue he's so "straight" or boring. I looovee this song and i know for a fact my first time wasn't bad but it got better and better and better everytime =]]
basically:
i know the first time we had sex it was shit but we've both grown up now and i think we should do it again. When I'm alone at night and you're with your boyfriend I wish that I was more stable like he is, but looking at the situation as a whole I'm pretty glad I'm not. I just wish that you'd see how much better I am than him and leave him.
i know i used to complain about you being with him all the time and i still think he's a boring twat but, you know what, I'd rather share you with him than not have you at all. I'll settle for just a piece of you.
Oh yeah, and I want to add that I love these lyrics (and Jarvis' lyrics in general) because the song tells a story, but is much more than just the story. There are so many themes on love, emotions, human behavior & relationships running through the lyrics that make it more than just an interesting/witty narrative.
I recon this about jarvis having an affair with a woman, who goes back to her husband every night. He doesn't care if she's still sleeping with him as long she saves a piece for him. He's remembering the first time they had sex, which would have been awkward and guilt ridden so it was the worse time. that's just my oppinion, could be wrong.
I think everyone's been pretty spot on so far. Basically saying the first time we had sex was pretty crappy but we've both gotten alot better/had more practice. You're boyfriend's really boring but he's more stable than i am so i get why youre with him, but said very sarcastically, of course. Part of me feels like he's not sleeping with her, and maybe it's like the song is his attempt to get her to sleep with him again even though she's seeing someone else, because the saying she's going to be late makes me think that there somewhere together but havent necessarily slept together yet, but save a piece for me makes me think that they are, so i'm not sure, i think it's probably supposed to be ambiguous also it's definitely implied that the boyfriend doesn't really meaure up, the toy that reaches the place that he's never been and i think maybe the "we've grown" part is implying more than just emotional growth...
it's strange. the lyrics are so bitter, and yet the music is dare i say it...jubilant. I love this
@pumkinhed - that’s what’s so great about Pulp... this is one of their best albums musically imho (especially “your sister’s clothes”) and I really love the looks of confusion on friends faces when I play these songs and they catch snippets of the lyrics... pure gold.

sexual frustration anyone?
This song is about encountering an ex- I think we can safely say that.
The lines "he's so straight" and "Jesus, it must be great to be straight ", lead me to believe she left the narrator because of his sexual orrientation.
Great song. Takes me back to when I was about 5.
