Echo Beach Lyrics

Echo Beach

I know it's out of fashion
And a trifle uncool
But I can't help it
I'm a romantic fool
It's a habit of mine
To watch the sun go down
On Echo beach, I watch the sun go down

From nine till five I have to spend my time at work
The job is very boring, I'm an office clerk
The only thing that helps pass the time away
Is knowing I'll be back at Echo Beach some day

On a silent summer evening
The sky's alive with light
Building in the distance
Surrealistic sight
On Echo Beach
Waves make the only sound
On Echo Beach
There's not a soul around

From nine till five I have to spend my time at work
The job is very boring, I'm an office clerk
The only thing that helps pass the time away
Is knowing I'll be back at Echo Beach some day

Echo Beach
Far away in time
Echo Beach
Far away in time

REPEAT AND FADE

This is one of those "Yearning for a faraway place" songs. I always find it bittersweet. I'm reminded of "Africa", by Toto. All of these songs are about lost childhood, or heaven, or something just over the horizon, or on the other side of the mirror.

In addition to the above, the song kind of hints that Echo Beach is the spot where the singer and her lover meet to talk and have fun, or she possibly has some other pleasant memory there. She's really sick of the rat race and wants to be on Echo Beach with her lover or reminiscing. However, the last lines tell us that she knows it's going to be a long time before she can have that again.

@quamp Also, this was not really based on an actual place. They were trying to capture the feeling that one has at a horrible rat race job where very little fun is allowed and people pine to get away.

We see this longing to be back at Echo Beach, and how the location is 'far away in time', which helps the person, stuck in a mundane job, to escape the tedious, circular structure of 9-5 life.

Being 'back' at echo beach shows how she has been there before, and experienced a form of emotional connection with such place - such a place-person bond can be special, hence, a song highlighting this, and the need for people to get away to their special place - together, or alone.

This is one of those songs thats a total 'grower'. First heard it and thought - nah, nothing special, but now I absolutly love it!

this song is really catchy, and it's too bad that most people have pretty much forgotten about the Muffins, and other canadian groups (the spoons, the arrows) for their contributions to the pop/rock and new wave scenes in the 70s and 80s. go buy M+Ms anthology on amazon.com and cheeck em out, for either nostaglia or discovery. Seriously it's really solid.

Some one (preferably not me) should post the lyrics to Paint By Number Heart, which is my favorite Muffins song of all time. Hehe :)

The place echo Beach does in fact. EXIST

However it is far away in time Echo Beach, far away in time

Therefore to go there you need to go through platform 9 and 3 quarters then drive at 88mph then go through the wardrobe walk past the ice queen and your there
