Sunless Saturday Lyrics
I see the pestilence outside my window
I see the dung heaps piled at least a mile high
I see the shards of shattered dreams in the street
I face the morning with my customary sigh
I hear the sounds of children laughing aloud
A stumbling wino has attracted quite a crowd
My breakfast finished now i brave the outside
But clouds have hidden all the warmth inside
Chase these clouds away
I hate this sunless Saturday
Freedom come
For us now
Light our sky
Burn away these clouds
Perhaps the charcoal grey and brown around me
Is just the mirror image of my tainted soul
I think the sun will never visit my sky
Until the truth is seen by each and every eye
I see the helpless and i see the insane
I see a pauper singing in the pouring rain
I see the means of help elude us again
I think the sun will never visit me again
I see the dung heaps piled at least a mile high
I see the shards of shattered dreams in the street
I face the morning with my customary sigh
A stumbling wino has attracted quite a crowd
My breakfast finished now i brave the outside
But clouds have hidden all the warmth inside
I hate this sunless Saturday
For us now
Light our sky
Burn away these clouds
Is just the mirror image of my tainted soul
I think the sun will never visit my sky
Until the truth is seen by each and every eye
I see a pauper singing in the pouring rain
I see the means of help elude us again
I think the sun will never visit me again

C'mon! Doesn't anyone remember this song? It ROCKS! I think the key to the meaning of this song is in the second to last verse. Though he's singing about depressing images around him, it's all a metaphor for his feeling of being unworthy to receive the sun's light in his inner soul. whatever...it's a very cool song.
I love this song with a bloody passion. Its sounds so upbeat and shit, but then you listen to the lyrics and its like not so happy. I think the expression in it is clear, and only too often I can relate with the helpless feelings and hatred for the rest of the world. The happier rhythms that don't match the lyrics I think is like the mask one might put on to hid the true them from all the too self-absorbed, denying, or oblivious people that think they know them. Its kind of like saying, dig deeper, look to the true meaning of htis song, not the beat, but the lyrics. If you really want to know someone, delve deeper than the hair, the make-up, the clothes, the smile...cos it may all just be a hoax, a way to stream past the "Oh I won't tell" people to the "I'd risk my life for you if it came to that" people.
I think you hit it right on the head. It's that mix of dissatisfaction with the world and your place in it, with the happy façade we put on to face it. You secretly hope that someone will delve deeper and see past the façade, but most aren't willing or just don't think to.

Love this song. Depressing lyrics, but the music gives the song an opposite, invigorating effect.

Amazing amazing amazing song. I have to say that inspite of the lyrics or rather because of them and their seeming incongruence with that driving beat and fearless guitars straining at the leash.... i always feel empowered after hearing this song. Like i've been girding for battle. and i won't stop until the truth is seen by each and every eye!
