As We Speak Lyrics

As we speak...
-the stable table turns
As we speak...
-I should have known we're burned
And I guess I'll never never learn which of those faces
who makes it all turn
As we speak...
-I'm going deeper down
As we speak...
-With a terrible sound
a feeble holy bastard son
has it only just begun?

[Chorus]

I turn away.....fading out alone
Was a lifetime worth it all?
...fading out...fading out alone
As we speak we turn to stone

As we speak...
A young man looses his mind
As we speak...
He kills what's next in line...
A broken down mother ask herself why
-Is this the end of her precious time?
As we speak...
-a conscience leaves without a trace
a silent departure to a silent place
what do we know about the anger that starts to grow

Don't despair, time will heal your torment
Don't you dare, spend your days in hell
So beware, faith will bring you treason
While you stare... Oh!

[1st Lead Frenning, 2nd Lead Wichers]

I turn away....fading out alone
Was a lifetime worth it all?
...fading out...fading out alone
As we speak we turn to stone [Repeat]
As a lifetime turns to stone...

Alright, everyone who made no comments about the lyrical meaning needs to shove a pencil into their right eye as hard as they can. Seriously people, this is NOT MusicIlike.com or GenresIDoNotLike.org

Getting back on topic, I think this song is about how time always seems to flow forward despite how bad things go. No matter how painful an event may be, time isn't going to wait for you to recovery. It will simply go on carrying everything with it.

It also tells us to keep moving with time, because even if we are hurting or mourning, everything will eventually heal with time. They also seem to be saying that time spent mourning or cowering is wasted time that all adds up in our lifetime.

Lastly they ask themselves aswell as everyone else; Was all the mourning and time we spent pitying ourselves worth the time we lost in our life?

When they say: As we speak we turn to stone, I think its referring to how once things have happened they cannot be changed, therefore written in stone.

To actually put comments on WHAT THE SONG MEANS (after all, this is SongMeanings.com, NOT "SongsYouLike.com" or whatever)...

I think this song is a sort of sociological look at the world around us, "as we speak."

One line that particularly gets to me is "As we speak a broken-down mother asks herself why/ Is this the end of her precious time?" This is just one thing happening in the world around us.

"As We Speak" also has something of an epic feeling, because "as we speak, we turn to stone." I take that as meaning that as time goes on, people die, people are born, and ultimately, people become like stones: forever in existance, just in one form or another.

I always thought of the 'As we speak, we turn to stone' part of the lyrics as -

As we discuss things more and more, instead of solving them we gradually feel less and thus become lifeless - stone.

But yeah, that's just me probably :)

I think this song is looking around the world at an exact moment. As we speak (at this moment), all these things are happening. The "As we speak we turn to stone" line means that this moment is carved into your memory forever.

I took the song to mean as life goes on we loose the innocence we once had as children. And to the part where the mother wonders if its the end of her precious time. It's not only about our own innocence but those around us. The kid went insane and killed someone and is therefor without innocence anymore.

And the chorus says it right there. As we speak in relation to time. (the saying I'm sure you've heard) And without innocence we have a "stone" heart.

I see this song differently than most of the other commenters. I interpret the song as a statement about mental illness, particularly depression.

"As we speak The stable table turns As we speak I should have known we're burned. [...] As we speak I'm going deeper down"

I take this as meaning that stable people just continue on with their lives, while those suffering from mental illness are "burned", or forgotten.

"As we speak A young man looses his mind As we speak He kills what's next in line A broken down mother ask herself why Is this the end of her precious time? As we speak A conscience leaves without a trace A silent departure to a silent place What do we know about the anger that starts to grow"

This is about how a young man looses his mind, while a mother looses her son to mental illness. The "precious time" is the time with her son, who has sunk into "a silent place" somewhere inside his own head.

"Don't despair, time will heal your torment Don't you dare, spend your days in hell So beware, faith will bring you treason While you stare oh!"

Notice that this verse is in a different voice, as if everyone else is saying to him to not worry about it, because it will go away with time and a little bit of faith.

The phrase "As we speak we turn to stone" is about the way society turns it's back on people with mental illness while they suffer through it alone.

When you interpret it that way, this is a terribly sad song.

This is a beautiful song. Soilwork deserves much more credit than they get. Listen to Natural Born Chaos and you will never look at music the same way.
