Don't Dream It

For being a component of one of the campiest and most excessive movies in the world, this song is surprisingly deep. I especially like "As it clung to her thigh, how I started to cry, 'cause I wanted to be dressed just the same."

So, it always seemed to me that this song was about the tension that sexual freedom brings on. Let's remember that this was written by a (transgender) guy who grew up during the so-called Sexual Revolution, something many of us take for granted now. But the basic issues are still the same. Frank, having come on a mission, has discovered that absolute pleasure is an option. He is keen to awaken Brad and Janet to it, and they see the appeal, although it goes against what they were taught, to varying degrees. Meanwhile, Riff Raff (the composer in life) and Magenta judge the rest and want everyone to stay on mission, not appear indulge themselves in "idle" pleasures... despite the fact that they are in an incestuous relationship... remind you of anyone? Meanwhile, Dr. Scott, older and a little wiser, understands the attraction of surrendering to lust, but also knows that life can't just be lived "for the thrills"... the decadence will sap one's will... I think it's kind of a brilliant way of telling the story of what a generation went through when they realized the freedoms open to them, and also speaks to the conflicts many of us go through with our sexual desires... and I just love the song... :)

This is such a great movie! I've loved it since I was little, and this is a great song. I love all the songs. This one is great though, I love the 2nd verse about sinds of the flesh...I dunno I just love the words.

I think the overall message of this song is clear enough. Be yourself and do what you feel. Good song btw.

When they filmed 'Rocky Horror', they wanted to use the 20th-Century-Fox background, but FOX said no. (Even though it was made by FOX.) It wouldn't work anyhow. It was a better idea to use an RKO background instead.

warren67, yeah i heard that! they wanted to have columbia & magenta on strings making the spotlights move & stuff.. would've been interesting to see, but i think the RKO works better. yeah, very good song. naughty and carefree and honest. appeals to the frank in all of us, perhaps? :P

Considering the song's title was inspired by Frederick's of Hollywood's slogan, I've always kind of viewed this whole sequence as (unintentional... or is it?) product placement. Damn sexy pool orgy erotica product placement... ;)

I think this song explains how Frank became side-tracked with whatever his 'mission' was in coming to earth. He became infatuated with 'sins of the flesh' and gave himself over to 'absolute pleasure,' and now his purpose is to make others do the same. Clearly this didn't sit particularly well with Riff Raff and Magenta, hence their rebellion and the line, 'you're lifestyle's too extreme.
