"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
I heard you on the wireless back in '52
Lying awake intent at tuning in on you
If I was young it didn't stop you coming through
(Oh-a-oh)
They took the credit for your second symphony
Rewritten by machine on new technology
And now I understand the problems you can see
(Oh-a-oh)
I met your children
(Oh, a, oh)
What did you tell them?
(Video killed the radio star)
(Video killed the radio star)
Pictures came and broke your heart
(Oh-a-a-a-oh)
And now we meet in an abandoned studio
We hear the playback and it seems so long ago
And you remember the jingles used to go
(Oh-a-oh)
You were the first one
(Oh-a-oh)
You were the last one
(Video killed the radio star)
(Video killed the radio star)
In my mind and in my car
We can't rewind we've gone too far

Put the blame on VCR

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Magical
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
I think this song means that music videos made people stop listening to the radio
this song has definitely a direct meaning in the sense that new technology came and replaced the old one, that pictures and looks have more meaning than before etc..<br /> <br /> But the author definitely intended to make the meaning a bit unclear and open for interpretation in order to stimulate curiosity; There is definitely a hidden meaning in that song, and it is easily detectable in the selection of words which can never be a coincidence:<br /> <br /> "lying awake.. If I was young it didn't stop you coming through", coming through what? <br /> It is like a teenager in love.<br /> <br /> "i met your children" here the radio seems like a human being with children, what did the author mean by the radio, or radio star's children? newer technology, followers or simply children?<br /> <br /> "you were the first one..you were the last one" First and last what? radio star in history? i think that these words, my first, my last, are used in romance most of the time and the meaning of it with the radio, is simply not clear...<br /> <br /> "And now we meet in an abandoned studio<br /> We hear the playback and it seems so long ago<br /> And you remember the jingles used to go"<br /> Why would the Author meet the radio, why not lyrics like i found my old radio or something in that sense? and YOU remember, who is YOU? also not clear... does the radio have a memory?<br /> <br /> "In my mind and in my car<br /> We can't rewind we've gone to far<br /> Pictures came and broke your heart"<br /> the radio's heart is broken? WE have gone to far? it is like a mistake that WE did, there is definitely some guilt in this... although the technology is always changing, why does the author want to rewind that much?<br /> <br /> Now try to imagine this song is about his first love, when the author was young, he fell in love "If I was young it didn't stop you coming through". she was his first and last love but video, a new girl came and broke her heart, although it was a mistake, we cannot rewind, we have gone too far... We finally meet after a long time, you have children now, "We hear the playback and it seems so long ago And you remember the jingles used to go" we remember our childhood, love memories ...<br /> <br /> This is definitely ONE meaning the author intended to put in his song, although i admit that there are others, that's what makes this song so brilliant!!<br /> <br /> <br />
Hey stephaniella, <br /> nice work. just on the 'you were the first one... you were the last one' lyric, i think there's a definite meaning here - radio 'stars' came and went so quickly. the advent of radio as an entertainment, musically, gave only a small number of years for a star to develop, and then radio entertainment was taken over by MTV and the like...<br /> just how i see it :)
