the song is about Claudes confusion. I think it is fantastic since it is an exellent picture on his privat thoughts and desperation, and on the same time it is the same thoughts that touches all the soldiers who went to Vietnam, and didn't quit know WHY, but where unable to (like Berger in the movie) turn thier government down. Claude is ready to follow any clue he couldt have, as long as it explains why he has to die in a strange country, and for whathe is doing it. there are no good answers to these questions.
