Well, I found out this song is in fact a cover for the Crossroads Blues by Robert Johnson. I guess this song IS in fact about meeting the Devil at the crossroads and selling your soul to him so that you can play the guitar.
This is Clapton's best live solo recorded. The sheer verocity of it is amazing. The 3 piece sound like a 5-piece all playing solos whilst together. An amazing band.

I know Cream was essentially an electric blues band, and the crossroads is a reoccuring theme in blues music.For example, Robert Johnson, one of the greatest blues musicians of all time sold his soul to the Devil at the crossroads. Could Cream's song have anything to do with that?

there was a movie called Crossroads, it is about "guitar dueling" or something like that. i haven't seen it but that's what i recall from the plot outline.
The original of this song does feature in the film of the same name, staring steve vai as the devils axe weilding gutiar maestro. Its a must see film for any fan of blues or wonderful guitar solo's
I love this song. Clapton is my hero. I've learned so much from his music. I actually prefer this version to Rob Johnson's.

About the solos, I can think of a bunch of solos better than Stairway's. And a handful better than this.
