The Wild Boys Lyrics

The wild boys are calling on their way back from the fire
in august moon's surrender to a dust cloud on the rise
wild boys fallen far from glory
reckless and so hungered on the razors edge you trail
because there's murder by the roadside in a sore afraid new world

they tried to break us, looks like they'll try again

wild boys never lose it
wild boys never chose this way
wild boys never close your eyes
wild boys always shine

you got sirens for a welcome there's bloodstain for your pain
and your telephone been ringing wile you're dancing in the rain
wild boys wonder where is glory
where is all you angels now the figureheads have fell
and lovers war with arrows over secrets they could tell

they tried to tame you looks like they'll try again

wild boys never lose it
wild boys never chose this way
wild boys never close your eyes
wild boys always shine

This was considered very different from anything they had ever done when they released it. Still is.

Whether it was intended or not, I feel like this song has a double meaning since the Wild Boys from the original book it speaks of are homosexuals. “They’ll try to tame you, looks like they’ll try again” “Wild boys never chose this way” I doubt it was meant to do this, but you never know.

The Wild Boys is a book by William S. Burroughs about renegade homosexual boys and is considered to be a better work than his more famous Naked Lunch. Simon le Bon has based many of his songs on literature.

@brobish Yeah, I assumed it was inspired by the book. Although I would disagree that it's better than Naked Lunch! Vehemently disagree!

@brobish you mean gay boys?

I've always thought this song was about soldiers. Men who have fought in war and kept unrecognized when got back home.

makes scense

though being unrecognized is hardly exclusive to soldiers

When I hear this song it chokes me up a bit.

Imagine it as an analogy for growing up.

The wild boys are a group of teenagers. They all set out to have a good time and figure out the world, party, and cut loose. Now these boys are known to be party animals, and when they come back to thier hometown they are treated like strangers, and blamed for everything. They are trying to make these boys take on responcibility, but they want nothing of it. And in thier minds everything is telling them to fight it.

The Wild Boys are the band , the song describes their journey to fame and the debauched fun they had on the way and the backlash they encountered in the British press for enjoying their success too much

Doesn't that ALWAYS happen though too? Every blimmin time I try to dance in the rain, the telephone rings.

Can you all just PLEASE quit phoning me when I am shaking my stuff in a downpour?

Is that really too much to ask?

Thank you

About the video: Oh my, yes, really over the top, but fabulous. My interpretation of it is pretty epic (and my friends thought I had spent WAY too much time thinking about it) as I tied it in with the "Arena" video with Milo O'Shea as Dr. Duran in it.

In a nutshell, Dr. Duran is angered with the guys for taking his name. So he comes down from space and invades one of their arena concerts (remember this is during their '80's prime) and sets traps for each member to capture each one. The "Wild Boys" video shows what happens after their capture. Each is being tortured by the denizens of a post-apocalyptic society. Simon, the perceived "leader", is subjected to aggressive water torture. John, the perceived "empath", is chained to a car in front of a t.v. constantly flashing images of him and things that I associate with his vanity at the time, thus subjecting him to mental torture. Nick, as the perceived "brains", is essentially caged and forced to work on projects for Dr. Duran (one of the creatures tentatively hands him something through the bars). Andy, the perceived "muscle", is left hanging from a wall, fighting off the creatures with his guitar then collapsing from exhaustion. Roger, the perceived "navigator", is meanwhile teased by them, as he is stuck in a hanging flight device and they keep grabbing at his legs. Simon finally frees himself, fights a water monster, locates each of the band members and frees them (I thought the first hand he sees reaching for him is Nick's). Then they all leave victoriously in a car via ticker tape parade. See? Way too much time spent on this. :)

My Interpretation

I read that director Russel Mulcahy wanted to make a film based on the book. Duran was going to do the music (or at least the title song). The movie fell through, so Russel decided to do the video with them...

Wow I never knew that. I always wondered about this song and video. I just loved the group so much in the 80s. Personally I think their album Duran Duran (From the 90s) was the best ever. ....

I personally think this song is really damn cheesy, and the video too - it feels so overdone and a bit self important with not enough substance or even really decent style. ): probably a good thing that Duran Duran took a break at the height of their ridiculous popularity when they did, and later had a chance to be humbled by obscurity and lack of popularity before this kind of overbearing stuff was taken too far! don't get me wrong though, I kinda love the song and video for their cheesyness, in a way(hey John Taylor looks pretty hot tied to the hood of a car like that...BUT I DIGRESS). Just not what I'd consider DD's most respectable material ;) Notorious and Arcadia's So Red The Rose were a huge improvement, in my opinion.
