Light Up The Sky Lyrics

Yeah, we're all fast breakers comin' out of the gates
Takin' chances with a crash and burn.
Yeah, there is a way with beauty, but you never gave a love
cross the line where none return.
I watch my television; almost lost my mind.
It said, "Open your eyes. Leave it all behind."
I heard the wind a whisp'rin',
Strong magic comin' on!
They comin' out for sure.
Come see your children; yeah, they're lighting up the skies.
Won't recognize them any more.
Ooh, mama, see the firelight.
Ooh, we're comin' out tonight.
Wolves at my door wised up quick.
Turn here and gone from on the go.
Seen the old folks come up short were the pretty
Little kids who didn't want it, no.
I had some crazy vision, one I can't deny
And it said, "Open my eyes. Leave it all behind."
I heard the wind a whisp'rin',
Strong magic comin' on!
It's comin' on for sure.
Come see your children; yeah, they're lighting up the skies.
Won't recognize them any more.
Ooh, mama, see the firelight.
Ooh, lightin' up the sky.
Light 'em up!
Light up the sky.
Light up the sky.
Light up the sky.
Light 'em up!

The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This makes a lot of sense. I was in 7th or 8th grade when this song came out and someone's older brother had turned us on the Van Halen we absolutely love them and that movie was also a favorite.

I'd heard a few years ago that the meeting had something to do with children attending concerts and using lighters to light up the sky which I thought made sense also but the movie angle I'm sure his documented and makes even more sense. Maybe it's a combination of the two

Not "I had to pay admission when I came tonight."

It is "I had a crazy vision, one I can't deny."

Lyric Correction

Your lyrics are beyond crap. The mama firelight thing only happens once. You didn't include the full version of it either time. Like judyneric said it's "I had some crazy vision one a can't deny. It said...." Do some research instead of just guessing. I agree with you jud.

Um, was it the chauffeured driver the morning of the concert? I was all in black on my way to work? Blended right in with the neighborhood. Nice touch. From time to time I had to caution the over dressed from sticking out like sore thumbs. And then the heart might have been missed but someone drove around the front and called to say, there’s a pink glowy thing in front. The heart. How apropos. (Smile)

Oh and you might want to put it in paragraphs next time. It would help it look less like a brick wall and more like lyrics.

They're available copyright aren't they? You can't control how they look sorry about that.

It\'s about our generation not buying all the bullshit and living our own way. The lights are the lighters people lite up at VH concerts.

From the opening verse, the lyrics reference coming out of the gates fast and to me that's the youth of the 1970's. Later references watching TV & nearly losing his mind. Here in 2022, you can see how twisted TV has become really, the news & just about anything else.

As the song's lyrics progress, the younger generation are either shooting stars lighting up the skies and either burning out or becoming the next stars of success. As the children grow, you won't "recognize" them anymore. They transcend their more humble & traditional beginnings.

My Interpretation

Smoking pot. That's all this song is about.
