Little Dreamer Lyrics
They may talk about you cold when you were
Headed for the skies
But you were young and bold and baby didn't that
Change with a wink of your eye
Now no one's talkin' 'bout those
Crazy days gone by
No one talks about the
Times you cried
(Oooh) Little dreamer
(Oooh) Uh, little dreamer
And then they voted you
Least likely to succeed
I hadda tell them baby, you were armed with
All you'd need
Seems no one's talkin' 'bout those
Crazy days gone past
Weren't they amazed when you were
Really last
(Oooh) You are the little dreamer
(Oooh) You were the little dreamer, yeah, yeah
Yeah they talk about you cold when you were
Headed for the skies
But you were young and bold and baby didn't that
Change with a wink of your eye
Seems no one's talkin' 'bout the
Crazy days gone past
Weren't they amazed when you were
Really last
(Oooh) You are the little dreamer
(Oooh) Little dreamer, oh yeah, oh
(Oooh) Little dreamer
(Oooh) Little dreamer
Headed for the skies
But you were young and bold and baby didn't that
Change with a wink of your eye
Now no one's talkin' 'bout those
Crazy days gone by

Times you cried
(Oooh) Little dreamer

this song sums up peoples consistancy with having no faith in each other...everyone is goin somewhere, how full u live your life getting there, being there, and leaving there, that's all that matters.
This song doesn't get much recognition but it is Van Halen's one of best... It is about when you are young, you dare to dream ...without constraints
Yeah, I agree. This song is, in my opinion, their fifth best song. It is amazing.
This song is without a doubt, the most underrated Van Halen song, if it's not it is one of the most underrated.
my favorite song by van halen by far...reminds me of when i was a child and had all these aspirations to do this and that and the time and friends all gone by. definitely going somewhere, and its cool cause the ride there is pretty interesting. hooray for being 20 years old i guess.
This song has passed the test of time better than most. If someone is playing Van Halen at a party, and this song comes on, everyone wants it cranked.
this is awesome, I never knew that people thought as high of this song as I did. thats awesome. I definitely agree, its very under-rated. I love Little Dreamer.
This is the most special Van Halen song to me. This song will always be in my heart, and I'm gonna get tattooed "Little Dreamer"
This song means A LOT to me because it reminds me of my dreams, that I'm headed for the skies, I'm young and bold, what I want to achieve, and it is something that I kinda forget very often. I really feel I am a little dreamer, and I don't care if they really didn't take much time writing it back in the 70's. It really means a lot to me this song. I must believe in myself whether other do or not. It is just something I cannot explain with words.
This may be my favorite VH song, but I don't think I'd want Little Dreamer tattooed on me given what the song means. It's about someone who, despite dreams and potential, never amounted to much. The song is only partly about people dismissing someone's dreams. It's also about how that negative hunch they had about the person turned out to be true.

The central character only thought he/she was headed for the skies. But that's...
The central character only thought he/she was headed for the skies. But that's not how it worked out. The person was and remains a dreamer.
I think this is one of Van Halen's best songs. Sometimes I rank it #1, depending on my mood. It has sharp edges, and almost eerie backgrounds.
I have a different opinion on the actual lyrics. I've listened to this song many times with headphones, and this is what I hear every time:
"They may talk about you cold when you were Headed for the skies But you were young and bold, and baby Didn't that change with a wink of your eye Now no one's talkin' 'bout those crazy days gone by No one talks about the times you cried
A little dreamer A little dreamer
And then they went and they voted you Least likely to succeed I had to tell them baby you were armed with All you'd need Seems no one's talking 'bout those crazy days gone past Weren't they amazed when you were feared at last."
The differences are in the first line and the last line, and these are key.
In the first line, I hear "They may talk about you cold", meaning they talk badly about you, put you down.
In the last line, I hear "Weren't they amazed when you were feared at last", posed as a statement, not a question. Meaning, in the end they feared you, they respected you.
This makes more sense to me when put in the context of the rest of the lyrics.
In the beginning, the little dreamer was not respected, was "voted least likely to succeed". They talked about her cold, and those were "the times you cried". But the singer realizes that she was "headed for the skies", i.e. had a lot of potential. She was "young and bold" and "armed with all you'd need".
Eventually, that "changed with a wink of your eye" and "now no one's talkin' 'bout those crazy days gone past" because now she's "feared at last".
It is essentially the story of a young woman who was criticized and put down, and eventually made a success of herself, silencing the critics in the end.
@ron1035089 I was thinking the same thing. It is definitely not "you were really last", made no sense to me either. I listened to a vocals only and I can hear clearly, "Weren't they amazed when you ahhh - ppeared at last". Here is a link to the vocal only version -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-3OKsOmluo

@ron1035089 In the 80's the song was about the bright future we had,.. but since 2000 it seems that David Lee Roth really hates Eddie personally and professionally. It seems that Roth wrote the lyrics as a lament to Eddie's insecurities and addictions. Eddie wanted new wave synthesized sounds that gave us "Jump" while Roth wanted 4-4 beat big hair anthem rock.
