If You Must (Version 2) Lyrics

I can read, I can write
I can breed, proven plight
Nurse my greed, crease infold
Is it me, or my ego?

Write some words, make them rhyme
Thesis or storyline
Set the mood, something new
Is it me, or my attitude?

If you want to put off an image
The extremes, the extremes
Act it out, practicing, perfecting
Pressuring on to me, on to me, on to me ooohh

I will wait in a phyllum
To explain your asylum
I am tired analyzing
We've compared all our sizings you must

I speak to hear my voice

I can read, I can write
I can breed, proven plight
Nurse my greed, crease infold
Is it me, or my ego?

Write some words, make them rhyme
Thesis or storyline
Set the mood, something new
Is it me, or my attitude?

If you want to put off an image
The extremes, the extremes
Act it out, practicing, perfecting
Pressuring on to me, on to me, on to me
On to me, on to me, on to me, on to me oooh

I always hear "crease and fold" pronounced as "crease n fold" which reminds me of paper airplanes or origami - something you sit around make when you have a lot of time on your hands. The word phylum, being a nice biology word, denotes a classification of plants. Again, there's the idea of some sedentary, inanimate thing (a plant). Sounds to me liek a vague cyincal attack on music taxonomists (oh they're indie, and they're neo-punk, and Nirvana's pop-punk-metal, etc.) When it comes to "compared our sizings" I get the impression the song is directed at another band, or a band member.

This song is very powerful. It really had no set plot to it, just seems like hes letting off steam about certain things....and I love Nirvana no matter what there singing..

I think this song might be a dis against prog rock because in his journal Kurt said prog rock always has to many ing words. Look at the chorus "practicing, perfecting, pressuring..."

This song is great because he talks about alot of things that we don't often talk about. It's about song-writing "write some words, make them rhyme". And as any person does... you sometimes question why your doing what your doing. "Is it me or my ego", "Is it me or my attitude". THen it is about making music sell, and this is very true. Its about the extremes. If you want to put off an image, you have to act it out...and it takes practice and perfecting to create an image that you want to sell. There is alot of pressure to create music for the people...not just music to express yourself. So it's "If you must"

What I get out of it is something like, "Do it." Don't play it safe.
