On the literal level, it's about the dead of the night and the looking forward to start of the new day. At the same time, it's about a pining for times gone by and a desire for a new start in life. In the end, Grizabella sees happiness again, the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel.
This song makes me think about my troubled life, but at the same time gives me hope.

This song is a memorable one. I first got to know this song 11years ago, when I was in grade 4 or 10years old. It was introduced by my form teacher who want the whole class of us to perform this musical to the whole school during our graduation year end. I still remember each of us got to wear the mask of the cat face which we drew and designed ourselves. There wasn't any physical movements to this song, all we were doing was to stand on the stage delivered this song with pride, jus like that of a choir. When we'd finished the performance, we were greeted with loud applause, of course all of us feel proud to be part of this event. Its a beautiful song and its always reminds me of my form teacher Mr Yeo and all my classmates Pr4G of year 1993. It meant to be a parting song for us too, cos we were all to stream to different classes the following year. I really missed you guys.
i cant believe that only one person has commented on this song!! it's so touching, elaine page is my hero, and when it becomes a duet it blew me away. i wanna go see it as a stage show, but it wouldnt be the same because it wouldnt be the original cast. its really sad though, when she starts trying to dance
i am completely touched by this song. when i first saw this musical, i loved it and Memory was my favorite song. it was performed by Nyack High School when i first saw it. when i heard memory i raced home to buy it from itunes. even though i didn't see it with the origanal cast i rocked. thank you Sunny. i absoulutely adore this song too.
I love the version w/ Elaine Paige. This has been one of my favourite songs for many years. I have the CD...but I listen to this song the most because the vocal and music are both so beautiful!
