Gone Lyrics

All dreams have died along the way
I coughed up the price, I bought a cage
I've had a hell of a time since I went away
Don't know when I died or where to lay down

Gone, gone away
Yeah, gone, gone away

God knows I've tried, I'm dyed in pain
Strong yet simple drive, the freedom to say
I've had a hell of a time since I went away
Homing on traces of light, that distance fades

I'm gone, gone away
Yeah I'm gone, gone away

So they say with time we slowly heal
I caught a flash of your smile throught the fog of a dream
I'll have a hell of a time, I clearly see
I can't be by your side, I'll see you when I sleep

Now you're gone...gone away
Yeah you're gone...gone away

This song is either about his mother or his girlfriend that left him. I don't think it's about Layne because this was written before his death and it would disrespectful to say he was "gone" when he hadn't even died yet.

My Interpretation

@OddlyReasonable Jerry so pines for Courtney. ???? How did they meet and how long were they actually together?

it's possible it was about layne, in part at least. but the song was probably already recorded while layne was still alive.

cantrell actually wrote the lyrics to this song about four years ago while he was on tour with metallica....the song is about his old girlfriend courteney clarke....the last verse especially....

<yoda voice> wondering am I if song 'She Was My Girl' be about this Courtney?

A great deal of Jerry's songs are about Courtney. In fact most of the songs that have a character besides him in it, is probably about Courtney. She was his one true love.

great song...i dont really know too much about the relationships and lives of the members of alice in chains all i know is jerry cantrell can write some music and some damn good lyrics to go with that music. I love how he put his own touch on the whole southern rock genre, i hear a lot of skynnard in this.

"Strong yet simple drive, the freedom to say"

The freedom to say "stron yet simple drive"? Any idea about the meaning?

(I have strange feeling that it's sth obvious, but english isn't my first lang. -just to make you all aware;) )

I really am not certain because I suck at song meanings, but to me it sounds like he really knows what he wants, yet does not take action to get it. Hopefully that helps a little.

Considering that the whole stanza is probably about suicide("Homing on traces of light, that distance fades"), then that must be that 'strong yet simple drive'. Thanks MMQC for your help:).

Also, this song could be about himself. After all, he was struggling with cocaine addiction during the time that this album was recorded.

i have a good feeling that this song is about the passing of Layne Staley. "i coughed up the price, i bought a cage" the cage symbolizes heroin... which led to Staley's premature death. RIP Layne Staley

@SwornToTheBlack this was written and recorded before Layne's death

@SwornToTheBlack It's about Jerry himself. He "coughed up the price" (meaning, it was a cage of his own making, from the time he was young, he built it with himself with his talent and drive), and crawled into it as part of his rock n roll lifestyle.

It all seemed exciting at first, but he found out that as time passed, that he was trapped in that lifestyle, where everything was offered to him on a platter (especially drugs and women), yet what he wanted most--a life with the love of his life--he couldn't have because the life...
