Tommy:
I'm free! I'm free,
And freedom tastes of reality,
I'm free! I'm free,
And I'm waiting for you to follow me.
If I told you what it takes
to reach the highest high,
You'd laugh and say 'nothing's that simple'
But you've been told many times before
Messiahs pointed to the door
And no one had the guts to leave the temple
I'm free! I'm free,
And freedom tastes of reality,
I'm free! I'm free,
And I'm waiting for you to follow me.
Chorus:
How can we follow?
How can we follow?
And freedom tastes of reality,
I'm free! I'm free,
And I'm waiting for you to follow me.
to reach the highest high,
You'd laugh and say 'nothing's that simple'
But you've been told many times before
Messiahs pointed to the door
And no one had the guts to leave the temple
And freedom tastes of reality,
I'm free! I'm free,
And I'm waiting for you to follow me.
How can we follow?

^^Every song is one of the best on the album. Its the greatest album ever as far as im concerned XD.
The movie this song comes out of is a Rock Opera about a boy suffering from trauma and his healing, and this song is the pivotal scene. It's not possible to discuss this song out of context of the whole movie.
Tommy has become free of what was holding him captive. He has become free of 'the deer in the headlights' syndrome, He was unconscious of all stimulus...which is called 'shock'. In his cure, he has discovered something. What has he discovered?
In the line 'Messiah's pointed to the door', there's something about Messiah's message and 'the door'. The door leads to something and this is the thing (thought) that is not distinctly revealed. We know it's unbelievably simple. There's more about it in the movie scene and song which is just before this one.
"No one had the guts to leave the temple", we can see the movie disregards all religion as more stuff that gets in the way of emancipation. Religion, builds itself around a seed of truth. It's own structure then obfuscates the seed of truth. This is the only distinct idea in the movie.
In summary, I think the movie is born out of Townsends own personal struggles, emancipation and discovery. In interviews he has spoken of having been molested as a child, as was Tommy . Townsend was a pop culture icon...AKA..Pinball Wizard, as was Tommy. Probably all the scenes were brought out of personal experiences.
WHAT! WHAT WHAT WHAT! HOW CAN I BE THE FIRST PERSON TO COMMENT HERE?
It's Tommy's joy when he gets his sight back at the end of his story.
I love the guitar at the beginning, it really sets the tone for the whole song, definitely one of the best on Tommy.
I really need to see the movie Tommy. good song!
this song is so cool, i can't believe hardly any people commented on this. this reminds me of the end of school, i'm free... ahhh summer i can almost taste it.
yeah this song is one of the best on the album...
This song is GREAT!!!! Great guitar riff!!!! POWERFUL!! HOW CAN WE FOLLOW??? I lOVE singing along to this song!!! Especially John's harmonies!!
Unless it has a deeper meaning, it's basically Tommy getting excited that his is free from his self-induced "curse" and decides to show everyone how to find the way to what he thinks is true happiness. Then bad stuff happens.
