The Diary of Horace Wimp Lyrics

Late again today, he'd be in trouble though he'd say he was sorry, he'd have to hurry out to the bus

Horace was so sad, he'd never had a girl that he could care for, and if he was late once more, he'd be out

Don't be afraid, just knock on the door,
Well he just stood there mumblin and fumblin'
Then a voice from above said-
Horace Wimp, this is your life,
Go out and find yourself a wife,
Make a stand and be a man,
And you will have a great life plan

Horace met a girl, she was small and she was very pretty, he thought he was in love, he was afraid

Asks her for a date, the café dowm the street tomorrow evening, his head was reeling, when she said Yes, O K

Don't be afraid, just knock on the door,
Well he just stood there mumblin' and fumblin'
Then a voice from above said-
Horace Wimp, this is your life,
Go out and find yourself a wife,
Make a stand and be a man,
And you will have a great life plan

Horace, this is it, he asks the girl if maybe they could marry, when she says gladly,
Horace cries

Everybody's at the church, when Horace rushes in and says Now here comes my wife, for the rest of my life, and she did

Don't be afraid, just knock on the door,
Well he just stood there mumblin and fumblin'
Then a voice from above said-
Horace Wimp, this is your wife,
Go out and find yourself a life,
Make a stand and be a man,
And you will have a great life plan

just a small point, in the last chorus the words 'life' and 'wife' swap changing the meaning

Jeff Lynne once commented that the reason there is no "Saturday" line in this song is that, on Saturday, everyone goes to the football (soccer) game.

This is about a guy who is so desperate for love that he marries the first attractive girl he can get his hands on, then finds out that his life is otherwise empty.

It sounds like Horace had the idea that meeting someone, or getting married, would solve most of his problems..that it was the answer to everything. He then realized that it did solve most of the problems he had, but a new stage of challenges and problems had opened up.

That's my take on it.

Mm... This song really talks to me... If you know what I mean anyway. At the end of the song, the 'voice from above' Swaps Wife and life around, creating a totaly new meaning... Great song anyway!

Ryllick, I actually disagree. I think it means the guy needs to be a Man and find a wife that will be his support. He's just going along in life without much direction. He's obviously not motivated at his current job. He finds a girl, they get married and now he has a bit of direction in his life. The final chorus is saying, "Good job, you've found your wife, now go out and (be a Man) make something of your life."By the way, I concur with Innu, I can somewhat relate... I think many guys can.

I think it's somewhat inspired by Solomon Grundy (q.v.).

Definitely a very Beatles-esque tune. I've heard it compared to "Ob-La-Di," but I don't hear that. It most reminds me of "Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time."

@Zorro3 The end makes me think of Dear Prudence every time!!

Yeah, I agree with Ludeyn and Matchlyn. It seems having a wife is a start of a new life, with other challenges. I tended to think it was a negative point of view about marriage, but I don't think so now. Rather, I think it's the philosophical statement that you never really find the ultimate goal in your life even when you take the right decisions.
