Mister Kingdom Lyrics

Daylight comes to those who live
But those who die they never see the sun come
Shining through their window pane
They pass away

Silly girl to be a fool
You didn't play the golden rule
'Cos once you're done with one world
There's another waiting there

Chorus:
Help me such a lonely soul,
In dreams
To leave behind the world
Mr. Kingdom help me please,
To find the rainbow's end

Looking from this empty room,
The corridors of endless gloom
Go crawling through the night,
To meet the dawn that's on the way

Oh to sleep, per-chance to dream,
To live again those joyous scenes,
The laughter and the follies
That are locked inside my head

Chorus: repeat

I can dream of flying high
Above the city's cares and never be afraid of anyone
'Cos there ain't no one there

Chorus: repeat twice

It's about a miserable life. I don't have much more to describe it, the words just flow so well, with the instruments, I love it.

Is it just me, or does this song remind anyone of The Beatles - Across the Universe? Gotta love the Shakespeare "To sleep, perchance to dream". ELO f'in rocks.

I can see that link, webmasterdee. Jeff does an A to A rhyme then a meandering followup that doesn't rhyme. Likewise 2 quick lines followed by a rambling lead-in to "across the universe". Stylistically similar in pace too.

Meaning wise, it's certainly about dreams elevating a poor soul from the mundane world, but also at the beginning perhaps a touch of (suicidal) envy of the dead.

From The Moody Blues' "Question" (1970)

But in the grey of the morning, My mind becomes confused, Between the dead and the sleeping, And the road that I must choose.

This song is written from the viewpoint of a ghost who is trapped on Earth and utterly alone. Maybe it's after the end of the world.

For me the subject in the song has Passive suicidal ideation. The whole album seems to have a theme of general and specific dissatisfaction with life.
Two things about the song bring me to this conclusion.

1) The Chorus "Help me, such a lonely soul, in dreams, to leave behind the world". They want to leave the world but notes/qualifies it by saying (in dreams). 2) The Shakespearean reference "Oh to sleep, perchance to dream" has an established interpretation of longing for death in the hopes that there will be the ability to dream about pleasant things.

I "suspect" that Mister Kingdom in this sound would be God.
