Bittersweet Me Lyrics

I move across, innocence lost
All flashing pulsar
I move across the earth in my new pattern shirt
I pass satellites
"You're so bitter," your complaint
I can't give you anything
I don't know who you're living for
I don't who you are anymore

I'd sooner chew my leg off, than be trapped in this
How easy you think of all of this as bittersweet me
I couldn't taste it, I'm tired and naked
I don't know what I'm hungry for
I don't know what I want anymore

I move across, candy floss
I move like a tank
I move across the room with a heart full of gloom
I'm stronger than you think
Oh my peer your veneer is wearing thin and cracking
The surface informs that underneath
Underneath is lacking

I'd sooner chew my leg off than be trapped in this
How easy you think of all of this as bittersweet me
I couldn't taste it, I'm tired and naked
I don't know what I'm hungry for
I don't know what I want anymore

You move across, innocence lost
All static and desire
You're blue in the face from navel gaze
You set yourself on fire
You strip down and lay yourself out
I know you can't fake it, But are you tired and naked?
Are you tired and naked?

I'd sooner chew my leg off than be trapped in this
How easy you think of all of this as bittersweet me
I couldn't taste it, I'm tired and naked
I don't know what I'm hungry for
I don't know what I want anymore
I couldn't taste it, I'm tired and naked
I don't know what I'm hungry for
I don't know what I want anymore
I couldn't taste it, I'm tired and naked
I don't know what I'm hungry for
I don't know what I want anymore

How much of a hand did Bill have in writing these lyrics, if any? How close to leaving was he in 95/6. He left in 1997.

its a beautiful song, great dry vocals. hates being stuck in a certain situation. i'd guess a relationship, maybe within the band sometimes.

Think its about not feeling fulfilled, going through a period where you feel useless and not like doing much. You're annoyed with yourself ane everyone else is too.

Weird.

i think it's about being tired with your situation (touring non-stop, perhaps--"move across the earth"), but nobody understands what's so bad about it.. they think you're just complaining (bittersweet) (it's just surface cracks, with nothing underneath). but in actuality, he has valid gripes (which go unstated), leaving the song more universal.

i agree with simsfreg. theres a real sense of exhaustion and desperation. "id sooner chew my leg off than be trapped in this" is one of my fave REM lyrics.

it's about a relationship that he's trying to purge. "I'd sooner chew my leg off than be trapped in this."

beyond her demeanor, he finds there is much missing "Oh my peer your veneer is wearing thin and cracking The surface informs that underneath Underneath is lacking"

and now he is "bittersweet" about the whole relationship.

I think this song is about unsatisfying sex. The narrator is doing what he thinks he wants, but it just isn't it. Instead of feeling good, he's left tired and naked.
