How much of a hand did Bill have in writing these lyrics, if any? How close to leaving was he in 95/6. He left in 1997.

its a beautiful song, great dry vocals. hates being stuck in a certain situation. i'd guess a relationship, maybe within the band sometimes.

i think it's about being tired with your situation (touring non-stop, perhaps--"move across the earth"), but nobody understands what's so bad about it.. they think you're just complaining (bittersweet) (it's just surface cracks, with nothing underneath). but in actuality, he has valid gripes (which go unstated), leaving the song more universal.

i agree with simsfreg. theres a real sense of exhaustion and desperation. "id sooner chew my leg off than be trapped in this" is one of my fave REM lyrics.

beyond her demeanor, he finds there is much missing "Oh my peer your veneer is wearing thin and cracking The surface informs that underneath Underneath is lacking"

and now he is "bittersweet" about the whole relationship.

I think this song is about unsatisfying sex. The narrator is doing what he thinks he wants, but it just isn't it. Instead of feeling good, he's left tired and naked.
