Kosciuszko Lyrics

Older than Kosciusko
Darwin down to Alice Springs
Dealers in the clearinghouse
The settlements explode

High up in the homelands
Miners drive across the land
Encounter no resistance
When the people block the road

Old than Kosciusko
Dry white seasons years ago
Darkness over Charleville
The fires begin to glow

No end to the hostility
Now they wanna be somehwere else
No stranger to brutality
Now they'd like to be someone else

Older than Kosciusko
Driven back to Alice Springs
Endless storms and struggle
Now the figes begin to rage

High up in the homelands
Celebration 'cross the land
Builds up like a cyclone
Now the fires begin to rage

Call off the ultimatum
No don't turn away
Call off the ultimatum until yesterday
Call off the ultimatum, no don't turn away
Bind up the brokenhearted
No don't turn away

Call off the ultimatum until yesterday

like most of midnight oil's songs, i'm guessing it has something to do with the plight of the aboriginies of austrailia. arguably their best song. they play it great live.

As much as I love Polish heroes, this song is about Aboriginal plight in Australia, how their heritage is older and stronger than our highest peak and that should be respected, they shouldn't be abused or driven off their land by miners (for Chinese mining companies now own a lot of the Northern Territory) or anyone else.

It's about an uprising. Kosciusko was a Polish rebel hero. There's a mountain in Australia named after him.

Yes, Kosciusko is the highest peak in Australia, obviously formed ages ago (first line). Not sure what uprising it refers to. Eureka stockade? land rights demo's?

"Older than Kosciuszko" ... older than the hills........ the same struggle over and over again. the rights of the people exploited by corporations. irrespective of their colour. And the movement for revolution building against it. A very powerful album this one.
