Showroom Dummies Lyrics
We are standing here
Exposing ourselves
We are showroom dummies
We are showroom dummies
We're being watched
and we feel our pulse
We are showroom dummies
We are showroom dummies
We look around
and change our pose
We are showroom dummies
We are showroom dummies
We start to move
And we break the glass
We are showroom dummies
We are showroom dummies
We step out
And take a walk through the city
We are showroom dummies
We are showroom dummies
We go into a club
And there we start to dance
We are showroom dummies
We are showroom dummies
[repeat to fade]
We are showroom dummies
Exposing ourselves
We are showroom dummies
We are showroom dummies
We're being watched
and we feel our pulse
We are showroom dummies
We are showroom dummies
We look around
and change our pose
We are showroom dummies
We are showroom dummies
We start to move
And we break the glass
We are showroom dummies
We are showroom dummies
We step out
And take a walk through the city
We are showroom dummies
We are showroom dummies
We go into a club
And there we start to dance
We are showroom dummies
We are showroom dummies
[repeat to fade]
We are showroom dummies

This one is kind of creepy. It's from the perspective of mannequins, obviously. I think the meaning has something to do with the feeling of being used, or being a spectacle that has no use other than to entertain people. Once I heard it described as an "anthem of the mannequins." It almost seems like a call to action, to come to life and take back the streets or something.
I've heard that this song was written about the way Kraftwerk felt when they performed.
That they were just dummies up on display for the audience while they played.
I wouldn't mind being in a discotheque and suddlendy see mannequins entering and starting to dance next to me. I think they would strike interesting poses ;) .
What is a showroom dummy? It is what companies use to show people their clothing, products, and ideas. A dummy can't think for itself, it can only take in the ideas that are being put onto or into it. The purpose of the song is to call people showroom dummies. People don't try to think for themselves, they simply accept the ideas coming from big companies and consumer culture. The beginning of the song explains how we become these show room dummies. We are placed in a store (maybe life until adulthood) where everyone watches others and looks around and tries to fit into society. Once we are the same as everyone else, we are ready to break the glass of the store window and walk outside. We feel like we fit in with everyone else. Then we go to the club and do the same dance that everyone else is doing.
A rollicking down tempo synth pop classic about emergent intelligence undermining the programmed paradigm and engaging in gratuitous activities beyond the wildest dreams of its creators. There was no mention of the dummies having to pay a cover charge, so one presumes this is set in a pre singularity flawed socialist utopia as the rage against their confinement evidenced by the breaking of the glass confirms. The ambiguity expressed by the undisclosed motivation to dance in a club is a kinaesthetic ode to joy representing true liberation of consciousness whether it be mechanical or not.
