Wooden Nickels Lyrics
Went down by the old courthouse
Stumbling through the streets
Had to get out of the house
Had to use my feet
And you may not much of me now
But i think so damn much.. of you
Don't take any wooden nickels
When you sell your soul
A devil of a time awaits you
When the party's over
You're on your own
Trash truck coming up the road
Picking up the trash
Riding to a better place
Hoping we don't crash
Thinking how things turned out
I never would have gussed it this way
Don't take any wooden nickels
When you sell your soul
A devil of a time awaits you
When the party's over
You're on your own
And you may not much of me now
But i think so damn much.. of you
Don't take any wooden nickels
When you sell your soul
A devil of a time awaits you
Now the party's over
I'm on my own
Lada dada lada da lada dada da....
Stumbling through the streets
Had to get out of the house
Had to use my feet
But i think so damn much.. of you
When you sell your soul
A devil of a time awaits you
When the party's over
You're on your own
Picking up the trash
Riding to a better place
Hoping we don't crash
I never would have gussed it this way
When you sell your soul
A devil of a time awaits you
When the party's over
You're on your own
But i think so damn much.. of you
When you sell your soul
A devil of a time awaits you
Now the party's over
I'm on my own

I like the double meaning of "much" in the first and third pre-choruses:
And you may not think [highly] of me now But I think so damn [often] of you
Can;t believe this wasn't added earlier one of the best songs on DotG
indeed, i love it, it is awesome
this song is about going to heaven and rejoicing in your loneliness. GOING TO HEAVEN. BEING DEAD. RIDING TO A BETTER PLACE BUT HOPING WE DON"T CRASH.
It's about how awesome it's gonna be to die. and about the hope of the hopeless.
i agree that its about going to heaven, but i also think its about losing a loved one, but consoling yourself with the thought that they've gone to a better place and don't need to worry. "You may not think much if me, but i think so damn much of you" This song is just wonderful.
you never get tired of this song
I want to add to the other ideas by saying that the lines 'Dont' take any wooden nickels when you sell your soul' could appear to be mean and vindictive, but are actually really sweet, as he wants her to get the full value, should she sell her soul.
I haven't figured out if the artist is speaking to someone else, or to himself, separating himself into the dreamer and the practical.
Either way, the song is about betraying one's values, and that if you're going to do it, you better make damn sure it's worth it. Because at some point, you're going to have to look in the mirror and see what you've done to yourself for that nickel.
42's got it. I love this song! I've sold myself for a fair share of wooden nickels and no just what this song is about. It's great. It's not necessarily about heaven or hell. i don't think the songwriter even believes in that. It's definately about trading your values, integrity, friendships, family, etc for money, fame, sex, power yadayada...and then living to regret it. Ultimately a wooden nickel is worthless as are those aforementioned things. For some reason the song also sounds like a father talking to a son or some other figure that once looked up to the song's main charecter.
Any way it reads, great song from a great band!
