Q&A
No Poetry Lyrics
"There's no poetry between us"
said the paper to the pen
something's burning in the attic
that her tongue will not defend
through the arc of conversation
past the teeth behind the smile
down the miracle mile
to the bottom of the ladder
paint your eyes and hide the tatters
what's the matter baby?
could we go downtown
to the middle of the world?
you were always such a pretty girl
and you told me I was beautiful
"There's no poetry between us"
said the paper to the pen
"and I get nothing for my trouble
but the ink beneath my skin"
if your clothes are getting weary
and your soul's gone out of style
blame the miracle mile
and the bottom of the ladder
paint your eyes and hide the tatters
what's the matter baby?
... I'm coming too.
said the paper to the pen
something's burning in the attic
that her tongue will not defend
through the arc of conversation
past the teeth behind the smile
down the miracle mile
to the bottom of the ladder
paint your eyes and hide the tatters
what's the matter baby?
to the middle of the world?
you were always such a pretty girl
and you told me I was beautiful
said the paper to the pen
"and I get nothing for my trouble
but the ink beneath my skin"
if your clothes are getting weary
and your soul's gone out of style
blame the miracle mile
and the bottom of the ladder
paint your eyes and hide the tatters
what's the matter baby?

i think this is a great song. the music reminds me of nick drake... sweet, with macabre lyrics. i'm still debating what the song means, but i definitely love it.
Such a beautiful song, I tend to lie in bed on a sunday morning and listen to it... No idea what it means though :-P xxx
the song sounds to me like a relationship breaking up or prehaps not talking to eachother enough
this is an absolutely beautiful song. i don't exactly know what all of it means; however, i may have a vague idea. let me try to explain my thoughts:
this song is about the point in a relationship where the passion is gone, but the couple is not yet ready to let go. They are used to having each other in their lives and are afraid to lose something so familiar. They no longer have "poetry," or really anything special to hold onto. They attempt to speak, but have nothing left to say; attempt to smile, but it's really nothing but a facade. Yet, the man holds onto her, or holds onto his memories. He remembers her beauty and the the beautiful things she has said to him.
Everything else is just sort of confusing.. but pretty!
