Me And Paul Lyrics
It's been rough and rocky travelin'
But I'm finally standin' upright on the ground
After takin' several readings
I'm surprised to find my mind still fairly sound
I guess Nashville was the roughest
But I know I said the same about them all
We received our education
In the cities of the nation
Me and Paul
Almost busted in Laredo
But for reasons that I'd rather not disclose
But if you're stayin' in a motel there and leave
Just don't leave nothin' in your clothes
And at the airport in Milwaukee
They refused to let us board the plane at all
They said we looked suspicious
But I believe they like to pick on
Me and Paul
Well, it's been rough and rocky travelin'
But I'm finally standin' upright on the ground
After takin' several readings
I'm surprised to find my mind still fairly sound
Guess Nashville was the roughest
But I know I said the same about them all
We received our education
In the cities of the nation
Me and Paul
On a package show in Buffalo
With us and Kitty Wells and Charley Pride
The show was long and we're just sittin' there
And we'd come to play and not just for the ride
Well, we drank a lot of whiskey
So I don't know if we went on that night at all
I don't think they even missed us
I guess Buffalo ain't geared for
Me and Paul
Well, it's been rough and rocky travelin'
But I'm finally standin' upright on the ground
After takin' several readings
I'm surprised to find my mind still fairly sound

No comments? WOW. This is such a great song! I have good memories of listening to this album with my family. This song was a favorite :)
Like most country writers and singers Willie headed for Nashville. Producers in Nashville loved his writing ability but didn't like the way he sang and performed. They wanted to change Willie and he wanted to be Willie. That is why he wrote "I guess Nashville was the roughest". Willie drank hard and used drugs and much of this song is about that and his unhappiness with his career. Like many country writers and singers, his life was his inspiration.
I have no REAL idea if this has anything to do with the meaning of the song, but in one version of Me And Paul sang by Waylon, during the "Me and Paul" verse of the song, he would say "Me and Tompaul". Or maybe he was saying "Tompall", as in Tompall Glasser??? I really don't know, just thought it interesting that Waylon always said ""Tom Paul", or Tompall. Not sure, but here's the link to the video if anyone wants to watch it on youtube. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghdtHx4gWJI). Nevertheless, whatever the original meaning, it's still a good song.
Paul English was Nelson's longtime drummer and muscle.
@sam1063295 Now that makes since.. I only guessed he was referring to Waylong ( Not sure why he would call him Paul though?) Paul English the rough, tall, dark (been to prison in past guy) yeah makes more sense..
